The Texas Longhorns are the type of college football program that reloads rather than rebuilds and for the 2010 season they will strive to prove that they have plenty of new weapons that have been stockpiled in their recruiting arsenal as they have 7 new starters on offense with 5 new starters on defense as they enter the 2010 campaign as a 15-1 choice in college football picks at online sportsbooks to win the national championship in BCS odds. Texas is led by coach Mack Brown, who has turned the tables on Oklahoma and Bob Stoops to become the dominant coach and program of the Big 12. Texas has beaten OU in 4 out of their last 5 match-ups in what is generally known as the "Red River Rivalry" but also realistically the title game for the South Division.

Texas has gone 25-2 straight up in college football odds for the past 2 seasons and lost the BCS title game to Alabama last year 21-37 as 4-point underdogs. They barely made the title game after needing a last second field goal in the Big 12 title game against Nebraska. Nebraska is an interesting part of the Texas equation this year. The Cornhuskers are the chalk to win the Big 12 North in this, their final season in the league, before joining the Big Ten for 2011. Nebraska felt that the refs gave Texas an extra second on the clock to kick that winning field goal last year and their hatred for Texas is well known.

Texas travels to Nebraska for the rematch on October 16th in what is definitely a dangerous game. The UT schedule in fact has two other perilous dates as they will host improving UCLA on September 25th and play Oklahoma the following week. The season finale against Texas A&M may also be a problem heading into BCS odds. Texas has been a major overlay in college football odds with just one profitable season in the last four and just 3 seasons in the black in their last 9 overall. Texas will always have talent but they are also a target and this may be a rougher year than normal in Austin.

While the Ohio State Buckeyes are the Big Ten team that is most mentioned to be favored in college football picks to make the BCS title game, the Iowa Hawkeyes may be the better value as they opened as a 20-1 choice at online sportsbooks to win the national title. Iowa is coming off a strong 11-2 straight up season which was capped off with an Orange Bowl win over ACC champion Georgia Tech 24-14 as 6-point underdogs. The Hawkeyes paid out in 10 of their games last year to rank as one of the most profitable teams on the board in college football betting odds.

Iowa returns 6 starters on offense including senior quarterback Ricky Stanzi, who threw for over 2,400 yards last year with a 17-15 TD/INT ratio. Also returning is sophomore running back Adam Robinson who had a great freshman year in which he ran for over 800 yards with a 4.6 yards per carry average. The defense allowed just 15 points per game in college football odds, which was slightly above the 13 points per game allowed in 2008 as Iowa has had one of the better and more consistent defensive units in the land since 2008.

The man responsible for this up and coming team is 12th year head coach Kirk Ferentz, who is on the rebound after a mediocre stretch from 2005-2007 in which Iowa played .500 football. Last year was the 4th time that Ferentz posted double digit wins for a season at Iowa. One of the big advantages in college football betting odds for Iowa for the 2010 season is their schedule as they will host top Big Ten contenders Wisconsin on October 23rd and Ohio State on November 20th. Even their tougher road games at Arizona, Michigan, Northwestern and Minnesota are winnable and the Hawkeyes could be chalks in all of them. Iowa may not be the obvious or "public" choice but they could be the best choice at 20-1 as it looks like a potential bargain.

The Wisconsin Badgers had a nice rebound season in 2009 in which they went 10-3 in college football predictions and finished up well with a 20-14 Champs Sports Bowl win over Miami-FL. It was an important comeback year for coach Brett Bielema, who will be entering his 5th season on the job at Madison. The Badgers looked bad in going 7-6 in 2008 and Bielema was under fire for not doing as well with his own recruits as he did with retired legend Barry Alvarez's players. Bielema went 12-1 straight up in college football odds for his first year which earned him Big Ten coach of the year honors and that may have been more of a curse for him in the end as expectations became too high. Last year did a lot to restore faith in his leadership but online sportsbooks still have Wisconsin 40-1 to win the BCS.

Heading into 2010 college football predictions, Wisconsin is returning 10 starters on offense and 6 on defense. Senior quarterback Scott Tolzien threw for over 2700 yards with 16 touchdowns last year. Senior tail back John Clay ran for over 1,500 yards with 18 touchdowns and was the Big Ten offensive player of the year. Sophomore linebacker Chris Borland was the Big Ten freshman of the year and returns to anchor the defense that includes 2nd team Big Ten senior safety Jay Valai. Wisconsin's problems for 2010 have nothing to do with talent and coaching but instead are with the schedule.

The Badgers must play road games at Michigan State, Iowa and Michigan while hosting conference favorite Ohio State. Ohio State and Iowa are the Big Ten favorites and Michigan State is a solid team as well. Even Michigan could be improved and is always tough at home. Wisconsin has not been a profitable team since that 12-1 season in Bielema's rookie year and went 6-6 against the spread last year. The defense has allowed more than 20 points per game for the past 3 seasons and Bielema is a former defensive coordinator, which has been something of a disappointment. The offense averaged over 31 points per game, however, and may be even better for 2010.

The college football betting season is quickly approaching with opening weekend less than two months away and with that many sports handicappers are looking at the futures board at online sportsbooks for top values in odds to win the BCS Championship. While it is always good to look for value it is equally important to not make the overlay on teams that are over-priced and the Boise State Broncos are just such a team. To be sure Boise State is a top shelf mid-major program that is among the strongest home teams in the land but at 8-1 to win in BCS odds they are not a good value. Boise State will open the season against one of the favorites to win the ACC versus Virginia Tech at a neutral site game at Washington, DC.

Boise State is at their best on the famed Blue Carpet at home and Virginia Tech who is listed at 18-1 in college football odds to win the BCS, will have the majority of the fans at that showdown. Beyond that, Boise State is no longer a "surprise" team as everyone respects them and many of the general public will have money on them, which will drive down their overall board value. Also, keep in mind that Boise State will be leaving the Western Athletic Conference for the Mountain West Conference and the jealous teams that they are leaving behind will bring their best shot in league action this year. Bet Boise State 8-1 as favorites in college football betting odds with up to 260% in total bonuses and a 200% poker bonus.

The state of Florida will have two teams that may not offer much value in BCS odds to go with their "name brand" images as Florida opened at 10-1 and Miami was at 18-1. Florida was clearly outclassed by Alabama in the SEC Championship Game last year and must rebuild their offense without 4-year starter Tim Tebow. Tebow was a unique talent and it will take time for the offense to get in sync. Miami has made strides but has a brutal schedule that includes a game at Ohio State which will likely kill their BCS title hopes. Another bad price at online sportsbooks in college football betting is Oklahoma State in odds to win the BCS at 9-1. In the brutal Big 12 South Division with Texas and Oklahoma, that simply is not a realistic price.

The defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide have opened at online sportsbooks as 4-1 favorites in college football odds to win the BCS Championship for the 2010-11 season and that may be a solid price. Bama coach Nick Saban has loaded the program with outstanding recruits and the team has the confidence of a deep and loaded champion that has dominated the best teams in the land last year including Florida who has opened at 10-1 and Texas. Saban has built a machine and will face teams in the SEC that are not up to the Tide's level which should help their campaign as college football betting favorites.

Even Florida, strong as they are, will be rebuilding on offense and the Tide will catch them at home which will make their most dangerous game of the year much more winnable. Sportsbooks have Ohio State as a 6-1 choice in BCS betting and that also looks like a solid price. The Buckeyes are the class of the Big Ten and should not have much difficulty getting out of the league and into a BCS Bowl game. One team that could derail Ohio State in the Big Ten race, however, is the Iowa Hawkeyes who have opened at 20-1 which could be one of the best values in college football odds. Iowa won the Orange Bowl last year and has plenty of returning starters and a favorable schedule. Bet Alabama 4-1 as favorites in BCS betting odds with up to 260% in total bonuses and a 200% poker bonus.

The Big 12 trio of Oklahoma, Texas, and Nebraska will also rate highly with gamblers. Sportsbook have Oklahoma at 7-1, Texas at 14-1 and Nebraska at 15-1 in college football odds for the upcoming season. Oklahoma is loaded and if they can beat Texas in their Red River Rivalry showdown they will have the inside track to the South Division title. Nebraska nearly upset the Longhorns in the Big 12 title game last year and is also loaded and with a favorable schedule. They would love to leave the Big 12 as champions before joining the Big Ten next year. Perhaps the best value on the board is Notre Dame at 40-1. With a cushy schedule and national following they could quickly leap ahead of better teams if new coach Brian Kelly can ignite them early on.

2009 marked a low point during the Mark Richt era. The Bulldogs' 8-5 record was the worst in Richt's nine seasons. Georgia finished in the bottom half of the SEC in both scoring offense and defense. The defense was bad by just about any standards, causing Richt to part ways with three of his four defensive assistants. But there is reason to believe that 2010 will treat the Dawgs better. Richt is 90-27 during his stay in Athens, and wins don't pile up like that unless you're doing something right. With Tim Tebow and eight other Gators making the jump to the NFL Georgia is optimistic that it can get back to the top of the SEC East this season, but I can assure you it won't be easy. After all, Florida crushed the Dawgs 41-17 last season and the cupboard is not empty in Gainesville. The Dawgs rebounded from that loss to win four of their final five games, including a victory over Texas A&M in the Independence Bowl. That gives them some nice momentum heading into the season. Additionally, one has to think Georgia will do a better job of taking care of the football. The Bulldogs ranked last in the SEC and 118th out of 120 nationally in turnover margin a year ago.

Offense - Georgia has an offense loaded with talent and experience, but a lack of experience at the quarterback position could be what keeps the Dawgs from an SEC East title. Logan Gray is the only quarterback on Georgia's roster that has taken a snap in college, and he hasn't taken very many of them. Redshirt freshman Aaron Murray looks to be the better player and that makes him the favorite to land the starting job this fall. Growing pains are expected, but he should benefit from playing behind one of the best offensive lines in the league and from throwing to one of the best wide receivers in the country. The offensive line returns four experienced starters, including stud blindside protector Clint Boling. A.J. Green is a game-breaker, capable of getting behind the defense on any given play. He caught 53 passes for 808 yards and six scores in 2009. In order to take the pressure off of Murray, the Dawgs will go with a heavy dose of running backs Washaun Ealey and Caleb King. Ealey is coming off a 717-yard, three-touchdown season.

Defense - The Dawgs ranked No. 10 in the SEC in scoring defense, allowing 25.9 points per game. That was enough to send three defensive assistants packing. Todd Grantham of the Dallas Cowboys was hired to take over defensive coordinator duties. Georgia also brought Connecticut's Scott Lakatos and Vanderbilt's Warren Belin aboard to coach the secondary and the insider linebackers respectively. Grantham is transitioning the defense into a 3-4 scheme. He wants this unit to be the attacker, so you can count on the new scheme coming with plenty of blitz packages. Being more aggressive on defense should help the Dawgs improve some, but it will also make them susceptible to the big play. The player to watch is outside linebacker Justin Houston. He recorded 7.5 sacks last season.

Prediction - 2nd SEC East - Georgia will be a better football team in 2010, and we will get a much better feel for how much better when it plays South Carolina and Arkansas in September. Right now, Florida still looks to be a little bit ahead of the Dawgs on both sides of the football. That could change by the time these two teams meet in Jacksonville on Halloween eve, but I'm not ready to make that leap yet.
After a promising 6-2 start, Notre Dame lost its final four games in 2009. That was enough for the program to finally cut ties with Charlie Weis. But it is worth noting that Notre Dame didn't lose a single game by more than seven points, and four of its losses came by five or fewer points. If a few or those would have gone the other way, Weis may have been able to keep his job. Now, one of college football's most storied programs is hoping Brian Kelly can succeed where Weis failed. Kelly was a miracle worker at Cincinnati, leading the Bearcats to three straight 10 win seasons, but he has never had the kind of pressure to win that he now faces. But in his favor, he has also never had this much talent to work with.

Offense - Offense was not the problem last season as the Irish ranked eighth in the nation in total offense with a 451.8 yards per game average. The Irish were especially lethal through the air, ranking fifth nationally with 323.5 passing yards per game. Quarterback Jimmy Clausen and wide receiver Golden Tate are gone, but Kelly still has plenty of talent to work with. The first order of business is changing from a pro style attack to the spread. Kelly's spread offense ranked No. 4 nationally in scoring offense last season. In order for it to work right away at Notre Dame, quarterback Dayne Crist must be up for the challenge. He will have no shortage of weapons to help him succeed. If wide receiver Michael Floyd can stay healthy, he will be one of the top pass catchers in the country. Despite missing five games, Floyd managed to catch 44 passes for 795 yards and nine touchdowns last season. Tight end Kyle Rudolph is one of the top NFL prospects in the nation at his position and running back Armando Allen is coming off a 700-yard season.

Defense: This is the side of the football that figures to make or break the Irish in 2010. It certainly broke the Irish in 2009 when it allowed 30 or more points in six games. Defensive coordinator Bob Diaco is confident he can get more out of this unit right away by changing to a 3-4 scheme, which is a better fit for his personnel. Diaco will benefit from inheriting a defense that returns six players in its front seven. Defensive end Ethan Johnson leads an experienced front line. Senior Brian Smith heads up a solid linebacking unit, which also features highly regarded sophomore Manti Te'o. The secondary loses safety Kyle McCarthy, but there is depth behind him with Jamoris Slaughter, Harrison Smith and brother Dan.

Prediction - 8-5 - With seven home games and two neutral site contests, the schedule sets up nicely for Notre Dame to show improvement in the win column in Kelly's first season. Be sure to check out my 2010 college football predictions report to get my take on other top programs across the country.

The college football odds makers don't stand a chance against Jimmy Boyd's award-winning football picks this season!

It will be no easy task for Texas to get back to the Big 12 title game after losing the winningest quarterback in the history of NCAA Division I football. The offense also lost top receiver Jordan Shipley, and the defense must find a way to replace Lamarr Houston, Sergio Kindle, Roddrick Muckelroy and Earl Thomas. That's the bad news. The good news is head coach Mack Brown is a ridiculous 128-27 in 12 seasons at Texas. In other words, Texas is one of the few programs across the country bringing in enough talent year after year to consistently reload.

Offense: Garrett Gilbert is faced with the task of replacing one of the best college football players of all-time. He does enter the 2010 season having won his last 30 game as a starting quarterback, spanning his 2007 and 2008 high school seasons when he led Lake Travis High to consecutive state titles. We did see glimpses of brilliance when he replaced McCoy in last season's BCS championship, but we also saw classic rookie mistakes. Coach Brown is not confident that Gilbert is ready to run the spread so he is installing a power-running offense to take some of the pressure off of his young signal caller. Texas has succeeded with this type of offense in the past with running backs like Ricky Williams and Cedric Benson putting up huge numbers. The problem is I don't see any tailbacks in Austin of their caliber. Brown was not happy about how ineffective his running game was last season. The Horns averaged only 4.0 yards per carry, their lowest tally since averaging 3.4 in 2002. Tre' Newton will get the bulk of the work once again. He gained 552 yards and scored six touchdowns a season ago. If the running game can show the kind of improvement Brown is hoping for, it will open up some nice play-action passing opportunities for Gilbert. Such opportunities will go a long way toward boosting his confidence.

Defense: The Longhorns led the entire country in rushing defense in 2009, allowing only 72.4 rushing yards per game. Stuffing the run will once again be their forte. Defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has enjoyed a lot of success by daring teams to beat Texas through the air. His defenses play the run, forcing teams to pass, and that allows his powerful ends and talented defensive backs to take care of the rest. One of those ends is Sam Acho. He led the Horns with 10 sacks in 2009. Curtis Brown, Aaron Williams and Blake Gideon are all future NFL defensive backs. Gideon really has a nose for the football, picking off six passes last season. The Horns did lose some talented players, but Muschamp has enough talent stepping in to execute his scheme again.

Prediction: 2nd Big 12 South - As good as the Texas offense was in 2009, the defense was the strength of the team. That will again be the case in 2010. Brown will rely more heavily on his defense as he looks to grind out games while his new starting quarterback gains experience. Texas will likely take a small step back following the loss of McCoy, but it is still talented enough to post another double-digit win season.
Beat the college football odds this season with the help of Jimmy Boyd's award-winning picks!

The Tennessee Volunteers finished the 2009 season 7-6.
The Tennessee Volunteers finished the 2009 season 7-6. They weren't able to cap off their campaign with a victory over Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, but it was still a nice year considering 2008 ended without a bowl game. It is also encouraging that three of Tennessee's losses came by four of fewer points. In fact, Tennessee played national champion Alabama as tough as anyone all season. All in all, Lane Kiffin's first season at Tennessee was a success in my book. But Kiffin has now left for USC, and the program has been put in the hands of Derek Dooley. Dooley is a good hire, but his first season on the job could be a very trying one. The Volunteers open the 2010 season by playing the likes of Oregon, Florida, LSU, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina in six of their first eight games. If the Vols can't find a way to win any of those contests, getting back to a bowl game could be a very difficult task.

Offense: Tennessee's offense was better than expected in 2009 when it averaged 29.3 points. The Vols were able to do most of their damage through the air. They ranked No. 3 in the SEC with 226.3 passing yards per game. Unfortunately, the offense could take a step back this season. Junior college transfer Matt Simms is the early favorite to land the starting job, and he certainly has the pedigree. He is the son of Super Bowl MVP Phil Simms. However, the horse with the best pedigree doesn't always win the race. Simms is very much unproven, and he will be working behind an offensive line that only returns one player with starting experience in league play. The good news for Simms is that he has a talented stable of receivers to work with. Wide receivers Gerald Jones and Denarius Moore have big play ability, and Luke Stocker is heralded as one of the best tight ends in the country. The Vols are also excited about incoming freshman Da'Rick Rogers and Justin Hunter. The running game doesn't inspire much confidence either when you consider that neither Tauren Poole or David Oku have broken the century mark for a season.

Defense: Tennessee really struggled to stop the run last season. It ranked No. 8 in the SEC in run defense, giving up 149.5 rushing yards per game. The defensive line is small outside Montori Hughes, and that means that run defense could be an issue again. Plus, the Vols are really going to miss All-American safety Eric Berry. The guy was a hard-hitting, lock down defender, who could fill quickly against the run. The Vols have a talented performer in Janzen Jackson ready to step in, but he's no Berry yet. Up front, the guy to watch is defensive end Chris Walker. He recorded six sacks and picked off two passes last season. He is the Vols' top returning performer in both of those categories.

Prediction - 4th SEC East - It can be done, but it will be very difficult for Dooley to get the Vols to a bowl game considering how inexperienced this team is and how tough the schedule is. The defense has enough talent to remain a solid unit, but right now the offense looks like it will need time to jell. And time isn't exactly on Tennessee's side with all the tough games in September and October.

The Ohio Buckeyes are hoping that the 2010 season will land them in the BCS National Championship game for the fourth time in the past nine seasons, as they bring back 16 starters from the 2009 season where they went 11-2. The Buckeyes won the Big 10 title going 7-1 in conference play, giving them at least a share of the title for the past five years. Even though this is a very talented team, it won't be an easy road to the National Championship game as they have to take on a tough Miami Hurricane team in non-conference play, and then have road games against both Iowa and Wisconsin. Here is a quick look at what the Buckeyes will be sending out on both sides of the ball, plus my prediction on where they finish the 2010 season in the Big 10.

Offense: The 2010 season will lie heavily on the shoulders of junior quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who can't afford another slow start to the season. Pryor played great in the Buckeyes Rose Bowl game against Oregon, but will see much tougher defenses in conference play this season. The Buckeyes failed to have a 1,000 yard rusher for the first time in four seasons, but I look for senior Brandon Saine to hit the mark this season, also keep an eye out for red-shirt freshman Jaamal Berry. The Buckeyes have one of the top receivers in the country in DeVier Posey, and another quality threat in senior Dane Sanzenbacher. The Buckeyes figure to have one of the top offensive lines in the country this season, as they return four starters, but should have no problems with Mike Adams taking over at left tackle.

Defense: The Buckeyes will once again have a top defense in 2010, even though they return just six starters on this side of the ball. The only concern will come up front on the defensive line, where they must replace three starters to go along side senior defensive end Cameron Heyward, who led the Buckeyes in sacks with 6.5 in 2009. Junior Nathan Williams figures to take over at the other end spot, while senior Dexter Larimore and sophomore John Simon are expected to start in the middle. The Buckeyes are loaded with talent at linebacker, as they bring back two of the best in the country in Brian Rolle and Ros Homan, and I look for junior Etienne Sabino to be a force as he steps in at the strong side spot. The secondary will feature two very good corners in seniors Chimdi Chekwa and Devon Torrence, while sophomore Orhian Johnson is expected to start at the open strong safety spot alongside the very talented free safety Ben Buchanan.

Prediction 2nd Big Ten: It's easy to see why so many experts have this team picked a top the Big 10 this season, but I think the Buckeyes streak of consecutive conference titles comes to an end this year, as I have the Buckeyes losing at Iowa this season.

Lets get ready to rumble again!

With Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy coming back for another season of college ball, which should result in another wild contest for the Heisman Trophy.

Online sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com posted the Heisman Trophy odds and it looks good that we could have a two-time winner, something that has only happened once before (Archie Griffin of Ohio State won the Heisman Trophy twice in back to back years - 1973-74).

Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow is the odds on favorite to win the trophy in 2009. SPORTSBETTING.com currently have him listed at 3-2. Tebow was the 2007 winner. Early action being wagered at the online sportsbook has about 20% of all the betting action coming in on Tebow.

The 2008 winner, Sam Bradford, is at 2-1 odds.

Those two are followed closely by Colt McCoy at 5-2.

All three have a great shot at winning, but Tebow is the favorite for a reason and its not about marketing (although that helps). He is the best player in college football, not a question. People who have been around college football for a long time are even prone to saying Tim Tebow could be the best college football player in history. Add to the fact he is playing on the best team in the nation and you have a perfect combination. What can trip up his ride to New York to accept the award if Florida loses a couple of games or if he gets injured.

It is very difficult to see Tebow not winning this if the Gators go undefeated (very likely) and he stays healthy.

A repeat is going to be more difficult for Bradford in 2009, as he doesnt benefit from a team stacked with great players. His supporting cast has dropped off heading into the new season.

And while its hard to bet on Tebow with such a short price (I feel he has a great shot at winning), I wont be touching Bradford. I just dont think he can get the support he needs from this Oklahoma squad.

Can Colt McCoy step up into the spotlight quite possibly. He has a distinct advantage over the other two, something that Tebow doesnt have an experienced O-line. McCoy almost hit 4,000 yards passing (34 TD passes). I like this Texas team and think they can make a real run at the Championship, backed not only by McCoy, but theyre solid on both sides of the ball.

McCoy could be worth putting a few bucks down on.

Check out all the Heisman Odds

Heres a short list of the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy, as provided by SPORTSBETTING.com

CJ Spiller - 20 - 1

Daryll Clark - 18 - 1

Jonathan Dwyer - 15 - 1

Jevan Snead - 15 - 1

Evan Royster - 12 - 1

Jahvid Best - 10 - 1

Terrelle Pryor - 8 - 1

Colt McCoy - 5 - 2

Sam Bradford - 2 - 1

Tim Tebow - 3 2
