NFL... A Brief History

The National Football League (NFL) is the highest level of professional American football. It was formed by eleven teams in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, with the league changing its name to the National Football League in 1922. The league currently consists of thirty-two teams from the United States. The league is divided evenly into two conferences the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC), and each conference has four divisions that have four teams each. The NFL is organized as an unincorporated association of its 32 teams.[1][2] The NFL is by far the most attended domestic sports league in the world by average attendance per game, with 67,509 fans per game in the latest regular season (2009)

The regular season is a seventeen-week schedule during which each team plays sixteen games and has one bye week. The season currently starts on the Thursday night in the first full week of September (the Thursday after Labor Day) and runs weekly to late December or early January. At the end of each regular season, six teams from each conference play in the NFL playoffs, a twelve-team single-elimination tournament that culminates with the championship game, known as the Super Bowl. This game is held at a pre-selected site which is usually a city that hosts an NFL team.

Season structure

Since 2002, The NFL season features the following schedule:

a 4-game exhibition season (or preseason) running from early August to early September;
a 16-game, 17-week regular season running from September to December or early January; and
a 12-team Single-elimination playoff beginning in January, culminating in the Super Bowl in early February.

Traditionally, American high school football games are played on Friday, American college football games are played on Saturday, and most NFL games are played on Sunday. Because the NFL season is longer than the college football season, the NFL schedules Saturday games and Saturday playoff games outside the college football season. The ABC Television network added Monday Night Football in 1970, and Thursday night NFL games were added in the 1980s.

Regular season

A sample scheduling grid, with a single team's (the Browns) schedule highlighted. Under this hypothetical schedule, the Browns would play the teams in blue twice and the teams in yellow once, for a total of sixteen games.

Following the preseason, each of the thirty-two teams embark on a seventeen-week, sixteen-game schedule, with the extra week consisting of a bye to allow teams a rest sometime in the middle of the season (and also to increase television coverage). The regular season currently begins the Thursday evening after Labor Day with a primetime "Kickoff Game" (NBC currently holds broadcast rights for that game). According to the current scheduling structure, the earliest the season could begin is September 4 (as it was in the 2008 season), while the latest would be September 10 (as it was in the 2009 season, due to September 1 falling on a Tuesday). Each of the thirty-two teams' schedules are organized in the following way:

Each team plays the other three teams in their division twice: once at home, and once on the road (six games).
Each team plays four teams from another division within its own conference once on a rotating three-year cycle: two at home, and two on the road (four games).
Each team plays four teams from a division in the other conference once on a rotating four-year cycle: two at home, and two on the road (four games).
Each team plays once against the other teams in its conference that finished in the same place in their own divisions as themselves the previous season, not counting the division they were already scheduled to play: one at home, one on the road (two games).

Playoffs

The NFL Playoffs. Each of the four division winners is seeded 14 based on their W-L-T records. The two Wild Card teams (labeled Wild Card 1 and 2) are seeded fifth and sixth (with the better of the two having seed 5) regardless of their records compared to the four division winners.

The season concludes with a twelve-team tournament used to determine the teams to play in the Super Bowl. The tournament brackets are made up of six teams from each of the league's two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC), following the end of the 16-game regular season:

The four division champions from each conference (the team in each division with the best regular season won-lost-tied record), which are seeded one through four based on their regular season won-lost-tied record (tie-breaker rules may apply).
Two wild card qualifiers from each conference (those non-division champions with the conference's best record, i.e. the best won-lost-tied percentages, with a series of tie-breaking rules in place in the event that there are teams with the same number of wins and losses[4]), which are seeded five and six.

In each conference, the #3 and #6 seeded teams, and the #4 and #5 seeds, face each other during the first round of the playoffs, dubbed the Wild Card Playoffs (the league in recent years has also used the term Wild Card Weekend). The #1 and #2 seeds from each conference receive a bye in the first round, which entitles these teams to automatically advance to the second round, the Divisional Playoff games, to face the winning teams from the first round. In round two, the #1 seeded team always plays the lowest surviving seed in their conference. And in any given playoff game, whoever has the higher seed gets the home field advantage (i.e. the game is held at the higher seed's home field).

The two surviving teams from the Divisional Playoff games meet in Conference Championship games, with the winners of those contests going on to face one another in the Super Bowl in a game located at a neutral venue that is either indoors or in a warm-weather locale. The designated "home team" alternates year to year between the conferences. In Super Bowl XLIV, the AFC Champion was the "home" team.

Pro Bowl

The Pro Bowl, the league's all-star game, has been traditionally held on the weekend after the Super Bowl. The game was played at various venues before being held at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii for 30 consecutive seasons from 1980 to 2009.

However, the 2010 Pro Bowl was played at Sun Life Stadium, the home stadium of the Miami Dolphins and host site of Super Bowl XLIV, on January 31, the first time ever that the Pro Bowl was played before the championship game. The 2011 and 2012 games will return to Honolulu.

The Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award, or Super Bowl MVP, is an award presented annually to the most valuable player of the Super Bowl, the National Football League's (NFL) championship game. The winner is chosen by a fan vote during the game and by a panel of 16 American football writers and broadcasters who vote after the game. The media panel's ballots count for 80 percent of the vote tally, while the viewers' ballots make up the other 20 percent.[1] The game's viewing audience can vote on the Internet or by using cellular phones;[1] Super Bowl XXXV, held in 2001, was the first Super Bowl where fan voting was allowed.

Since the first Super Bowl was held in 1967, the MVP award has been given to 40 players. From 1967 to 1989, the Super Bowl MVP was presented by Sport magazine.[3] Bart Starr was the MVP of the first two Super Bowls. The MVP has come from the winning team every year except 1971, when Dallas Cowboys linebacker Chuck Howley won the award despite the Cowboys' loss in Super Bowl V to the Baltimore Colts.[6] Harvey Martin and Randy White were named co-MVPs of Super Bowl XII, the only time co-MVPs have been chosen. Including the Super Bowl XII co-MVPs, seven Cowboys players have won Super Bowl MVP awards, the most of any NFL team. Quarterbacks have earned the honor 23 times in 44 games. Mark Rypien and Hines Ward are the only players born outside the United States to earn the Super Bowl MVP; they were born in Canada and South Korea, respectively.[8] Roger Staubach, Jim Plunkett, Marcus Allen, and Desmond Howard are the only four players to have won the Super Bowl MVP and college football's Heisman Trophy.

Many TV sports networks that carry football matches will provide streaming live coverage of football matches, usually for a price. Setanta Sports and Sky Sports are the two biggest networks in the UK that carry Premiership matches. As such, both networks offer live, streaming coverage of Premiership matches on-line.

A. Setanta Broadband

Setanta Sports offers separate live football streams for UK and North American customers.

North American viewers can subscribe on a monthly or annual basis. The monthly fee is $14.99/month and the annual fee is $149.99/year. The monthly fee gives you access to 150 Barclays Premier League matches per season. On Saturdays, Setanta has first and third choice for both the 7:30am ET and 10am ET matches. Additionally, both the Sunday 8:30am ET and Monday 3pm ET matches are first choice, and any games played Tuesdays or Wednesdays are also first picks by Setanta. Matches are also available via tape delay and on-demand.

Setanta Broadband also has Pay-Per-View events, which are priced individually on a per game or package basis. UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, World Cup Qualifiers, and the Portuguese Superliga are all available via PPV. Annual subscribers get access to PPV events for free, while monthly subscribers can watch PPV events on tape-delay 24 hours after the match.

UK subscribers have a little more football action at their disposal. For 7.99 per month (with no minimum contract), or 79.99 for an annual subscription, subscribers can get access to 46 games per season live and exclusive from The Barclays Premier League, up to 25 live games per season from the F.A. Cup, including one live Semi-Final match, and live coverage of the Final, 60 live games each season from the Scottish Premier League, including all the Old Firm derbies and all the big matches, action from the German Bundesliga, Frances Le Championnat, the Portuguese Liga and the Dutch Eredivisie. Additionally, subscribers will have access to the UEFA Cup, some England international matches broadcast live, and a handful of matches featuring Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

B. Sky Sports Net

Available to UK and Ireland-based subscribers only, Sky Sports Net is an extension of Sky Sports TV. If you are a Sky TV subscriber and you subscribe to Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 and Sky Multiroom (and are not benefiting from any other offer), then you get Sky Sports Net for free. If you are a Sky TV subscriber, but do not subscribe to Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 and Sky Multiroom (or you do, but you are benefiting from another offer), the cost of subscribing to the Service is 10 per month. The Service is NOT available to non-Sky subscribers.

Subscribers will have access to select Premiership matches broadcast live, usually 1-3 per weekend, as well as select live matches from La Liga, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Cup, the F.A. and Carling Cups, and the Coca Cola Championship. Additionally, subscribers will get to watch select International matches live.

C. UEFA

UEFAs website offers live streaming video of all UEFA club and international competitions. Live matches cost $7.95 per match and are purchased individually. There is a Replay Subscription that is available to viewers who want to watch matches on delay. A 29.99 annual pass includes full match replay, access to UEFAs archives, and live audio commentary during UEFA matches. Matches can also be purchased individually from the archives for 1.99 per match

Its important to note that UEFAs live football streaming video content is only available to Windows users. Mac users might be able to get around this restriction by using Crossover, but Im not sure about that. Its too bad. If you ever wanted to re-live Manchester Uniteds stirring comeback against Bayern Munich, Barcelona fending off an inspired Arsenal side, or Liverpools stunning win against AC Milan, then you better be using a PC.

D. ESPN 360

ESPN 360 is a great way to watch matches that you wouldnt normally have access to just by watching the ESPN family of networks. The catch is that you must subscribe to a participating high-speed ISP (internet service provider, Verizon being the largest participating).

ESPN 360 provides up to 10 different live soccer streams covering sports ranging from soccer to college football. ESPN 360 has archived UEFA Champions League events which are only available for 24-48 hours after the match. Additionally, MLS Matches available on-demand, as are the European Championships and the World Cup. Basically, any sporting event that ESPN has the rights to can be seen, in some form, on ESPN 360.

ESPN 360 is still in its beginning stages, so we should expect significant upgrades and greater availability in the coming years.

E. Fox Sports " Australia

Fox Sports " Australia is available to Australian residents only. Thank you Rupert Murdoch!

Aussies can get up to 4 live Premiership matches a week that you can flick through, similar to Direct TVs Direct Ticket for the NFL. Additionally, subscribers have access to up to 5 tape-delayed Premiership matches a week that you can watch at any time. Unfortunately, when it comes to UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup, or Carling Cup action, Aussies are out of luck. Fox Sports only streams Premier League matches. I guess Ruperts power only goes so far.

Subscribers can purchase a 9 Day Pass for $15 (Australian Dollars), which gives you access to 4 live matches and 5 on-demand matches. Or, subscribers can purchase a Season Pass for $125 (Australian Dollars), which gives you access to 4 live matches and 5 on-demand matches per week, which works out to over 200 games of the Barclay's Premier League in the 2008/09 season.

III. Official Football Club Websites

Most European clubs, (including all 20 Premiership teams) offer streaming on-line content to their subscribers. Due to F.A. restrictions and TV contracts, none of the Premiership websites are allowed to broadcast live footage of Premiership, Cup, or European matches. They are allowed to broadcast full matches via tape delay, and will usually provide live audio commentary, text updates during matches. Additionally, most club websites will air exclusive post-match interviews, video highlights, documentaries, and archival footage. Some clubs broadcast reserve and academy matches live.

Football and relationships can be a dangerous combination. As an avid football fan, as well as serial monogamist, I should know. By my last count, Ive given 13 different women the title of girlfriend since I was old enough to know what that means. And each one had a different way of annoying me when we watched football together, except number 13 who, by no coincidence, now holds the title of Mrs. Wise Guy. Since Ive finally found the Holy Grail of female football watching companionship, I feel Im uniquely qualified to use my vast powers of nitpicky observation for good and hand out some advice to the female readers of this site.

The first thing you should know is that as different as men may be in their knowledge and interest in football, we are remarkably uniform when it comes to spotting an attractive woman (sure, theres controversy around themargins, call it the Kirsten Dunst line). More importantly, we can all agree on who the cool girls are, and whether youre a wife, girlfriend, or out there looking, it behooves you to be football cool. Theres a theory floating around that knowing football can raise a girl up to 2 points on the proverbial 1 to 10 scale, and I completely subscribe to it. For the majority of men, football is our favorite sport, and being able to share that joy with our lady is surpassed only by sex, food, and, perhaps the birth of a child. On the other hand, many women can (both knowingly and unknowingly) ruin the football watching experience for men, which is the first step toward tuning you out in general.

To help maximize your potential to be football cool, Ive broken down women into four categories: the hater, the tolerator, the casual fan, and the knowledgeable fan. Sure, I could do the same for men (for example, pompous guy who tries to correct everyone on rules, the mysogonist, the guy who only cares about fantasy, the dorky guy who pretends to care but only wants to talk about his job , the alcoholic), but thats not the point of article. The point here is to maximize your desirability to men with a few basic insights into our fairly uniform psychology. Do with that power what you will.

The Hater

You do not like football. Except for gymnastics in the Olympics, you can do without sports entirely. Chances are, you grew up in a household with your two sisters and a domineering mother who trained your father to pee sitting down so the toilet would always be clean. Ever since you were tormented by that cheerleader and her dumbass boyfriend in study hall, youve gone out of your way to avoid the jocks. You found a sanctuary in the artsy/theatre clique in high school, and you went to a small liberal arts college that didnt even have a football team. Frankly, I have no idea how you got to this website.

After getting your masters in [something impractical], you took root in the bohemian part of the city and finally started looking for a life partner. One day at a random museum, there he was: cultured, sensitive, philanthropic, and, of course, nerdy cute. You spent a glorious summer together taking day trips, seeing movies, buying used books, and checking out the latest new coffee shops. During an August weekend trip in the Poconos, you declared your love, and you moved in with him the next week. As fall approached, you started secretly checking out Open Houses in the paper.

But then that fateful day came when he ever so meekly declared that he likes to watch the Seahawks on Sundays. And the other good games. And the cherry on top, that he plays fantasy. Ugh. At this point, youre trapped. You love him (not to mention that you sold all your furniture on craigslist), but you never fathomed being with a person that, eek, liked football. You instantly harken back to your childhood and remember all those great tactics that your mom used on your father: take a hard line initially; acquiesce only if he begs and make it seem like youre doing him a favor by letting him watch the games; then, while hes watching the games, ask him to do chores or take out the dog. Sounds like the perfect solution.

Except that its not. Sooner or later, hes going to get away from you for a bachelor party weekend and go all Ed Helms from The Hangover on you. So let him have his 3-9 hours on Sunday. Just leave and find something else to do. It will all be over soon.

Of course, if hes also into college football you should just cut your losses and end the relationship now. Its not going to work out.

The Tolerator

You have about as much interest in football as your "hater" counterpart, but unlike her, you're a natural pleaser. While we appreciate that, you must tread lightly if you want to venture into watching games with us. Being a football tolerator is like being a doctor, your oath is do no harm. First and foremost, this means you have to pay attention to the game. Because football is such a long game, there's a lot of time when fans are talking about other things or just not paying attention. However, during those crucial moments--a fourth down place, a two-minute drill, a game winning field goal--there is nothing more annoying than someone talking.

As a corollary to the pay attention rule, lets say youre looking to spice up your game-watching experience with a little action during halftime. Normally this would qualify you as the coolest football girl ever, but if its, say, halftime of the 2005 Divisional Playoffs, and Steve Smith just torched your secondary for the second deep touchdown of the game going into the half, your man is not going to be in the mood. Know the game situation and the emotional effect it is having on him.

And let me just suggest, if you take the initiative to actually try and learn the game, it could pay huge dividends in the football cool department. There is no stupid question when it comes to football, and we guys get off on displaying knowledge and authority. Just dont ask during a 4th and goal.

The Casual Fan

This is the category most fans fall under, guy or girl. Most likely, you were huge into your college team. But the NFL is not college. Being a college football fan is easy. You just dress up in your schools gear, drink yourself into a stupor, and scream your head off for three hours.

But, lets face it, the NFL has become the place for the sophisticated fan (minus your proverbial cheesehead, Dawg mask, and spiked shoulder pads), and its a minefield for the uninitiated. With all the technological advances and the growing popularity, you cannot escape NFL analysis. Every fan now has an opinion on the game theyre watching, which is cemented by all the talking heads on ESPN, the NFL Network, and the pre and post-game shows. Throw fantasy in the mix, and now youre talking about a sport that has become overwhelming to many fans.

So if your goal is to maximize the football cool, youve got some major learning to do. But you enjoy the game, have a strong rooting interest for your team, and youve come to this site, so youre already halfway there.

Unfortunately, the second half involves work. You need to go to a football-related websites every morning (hmmI wonder which one?) and read the major stories. Watch Sportscenter or another highlight show Sunday night to make sure you know what happened in every game. For most guys, this comes as second nature (because we dont have that many interests), but for women its tougher because theres shoes on zappos to buy, trips to plan, and celebrity gossip to check out. But trust me, get in this habit, and youll be amazed at the dividends. Especially for all the single ladies (all the single ladies!). Just knowing the major storylines and what happened in every game will allow you to hang at any happy hour, dinner party, or corporate boondoggle conversation involving the NFL. If you throw in a little humor by ripping the crappy teams or moronic coaching moves, youll instantly be labeled a cool girl. Youll have so much hand, youll be coming out of your gloves.

However, if you want to make it with the knowledgeable fans outside the singles scene and during the actual games, well then just a cursory knowledge of what happened is not sufficient. You have to know why it happened. Im hardly the authority on why the events of professional football play out like they do. But this much I know: 95% of fans, 80% of announcers, and 30% of coaches (Jim Zorn, Herm Edwards, and Dennis Green come to mind) dont either. You must find the experts. Easiest way: watch Cris Collinsworth on Sunday night because he knows his stuff and breaks down the strategy in football beyond the customary hes playing with a lot of passion out there line you get from most announcers. Also great is the Playbook AFC or NFC shows on the NFL network that breakdown actual game film and show you how formations have a huge effect on how a given play turns out. My personal belief is that knowing the strategy that goes behind football makes watching the games a much more fulfilling experience because you appreciate just what a chess match the game is.

On a more practical level, just knowing a little bit about the strategy behind the game will instantly make you more knowledgeable than almost any guy youre with, and you will immediately begin wowing people with insights without even knowing it. Assuming you take the advice in the next section, youll be about as football cool as they come.

The Knowledgeable Fan

You know the game inside and out. You play fantasy football and kick everyones ass. Everything in this article up to this point was a curiosity, like a college professor sitting in on a high school class. And we guys are simply in awe. But, as Michael Jordan recently showed at his Hall of Fame induction speech, just because youre good at something does not make you likeable or cool. If you have a chip on your shoulder, are combative, or proclaim know-it-all status, people will tolerate you when youre around and make snide remarks behind your back. Now, as a know-it-all myself, Ive become all too familiar with the looks on peoples faces when Ive crossed the line into pompousness. But women who know sports, especially football, they have a certain perspective that Ive only come to appreciate after several blissful seasons with Mrs. Wise Guy.

Other girls it ruin for you. The haters, the tolerators, the casual fans, they all condition guys to believe you dont know anything. You constantly feel like you have to prove yourself and establish your credibility. Ladies, I feel your pain, but simply, you must get over it. The vast majority of guys will instantly recognize you as different and give you the respect you deserve. So have confidence, and dont go on the warpath when you feel disrespected.

By that same token, there is something to male bonding that goes beyond just talking about football. So, please, try your best to not get too annoyed when we regress into those moments. The interplay of busting each others balls, arguing about which celebrity du jour is hotter, or communicating through movie quotes is something that many women have a hard time breaking into, no matter how much you think youre one of the guys. Again, you just have to understand that this is not about you. Its a long game, and that Will Ferrell impression that youve heard for the 120th time will eventually end. And though youre rolling your eyes for the 119th time, if you stay cool, well love you for it.

The Wise Guy: Dave Emanuelson

Dave bears no resemblance to the Three Stooges or a mobster, but a Wise Guy he is all the same. He boasts an impressive pedigree as a big-time D.C. lawyer, 10-year streak of straight As from sixth grade to his junior year in college, former Division 1 athlete (golf, but still...), and a 82% percent success rate of predicting whether instant replays will be overturned.

Dave never played football, but he's been to two Super Bowls (just the parties), walked the red carpet at the ESPYs, and once rode in an SUV with Brady Quinn. He's currently a two-time defending champion of his fantasy football league.
