Todays football shoes have been enhanced to a great degree making them integral to the overall performance of a player. There is more and more innovation involved in the soccer shoes of today with companies trying to create lighter shoes with flexible and controlling cleats. Some of the other top names in manufacturing soccer shoes or cleats include Reebok, Puma, Nike, Diadora, Umbro, Lotto, and Kelme. It seems that in the football field, Football Shoes is the biggest weapon for players to make prefect performance.

The first soccer footwear were black in color and had black cleats as well. Somehow the black color became the classic color for soccer shoes across the world. Of course, now the colors of the shoes have expanded from black to white, blue, green, orange, red, and other colors as well but the black soccer shoes and cleats are still considered a classic.

The first historical evidence of soccer shoes was observed with the most unlikely player of all - King Henry VIII. King Henry VIII ordered soccer boots from the Great Wardrobe and wore them during football matches he played in 1526. The boots worn by the King were made from leather and were hand-stitched by the royal cordwainer, Cornelius Johnson. Each pair of boots cost King Henry VIII four shillings.

Over the next 300 years, soccer slowly grew into a popular sport and this paved the way for proper soccer shoes. According to historical records, the first classic black soccer boots were noticed in the 1920's. A few years later, the shoe industry was revolutionized by the innovation of Adolf and Rudolf Dassler. The brothers started the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory (Gebrder Dassler Schuhfabrik) in Herzogenaurach in 1924. Adolf, also known as Adi had been making all types of sports shoes but he came into recognition when he persuaded US Sprinter Jesse Owens to wear them. Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Later on, Adolf went ahead and created soccer shoes with replaceable cleats. The brothers split in 1947 with Rudolph opening a firm called Ruda, which was rebranded later as Puma. Adolf registered his company as adidas AG in 1949 and thus the story of classic black soccer shoes came into being. During the 1966 FIFA World Cup, 75% of the soccer players wore Adidas Soccer Shoes and that by all means was a huge achievement for the company.

There are several aspects of soccer that play an important role in deciding the winner and this includes team performance, individual skills, soccer training, and equipment like soccer shoes. Shoes for Soccer have always been an integral factor when it comes to soccer skills and scoring goals. Of course, the shoes were initially designed to get a grip on the grass field and for hitting the ball hard. So it is very important for you to buy suit football shoes in football game.

First you want to know that football shoes are supposed to have a snug fit and you more then likely need to break them in for them to feel good. Most players buy cleats that are only lose enough to allow them to wear to pairs of socks so they can cover their shin pads.

Depending on what your budget is soccer shoes range in price from 30 dollars to 250 or dollars or even more. The more expensive the shoes are, the better the quality and durability. I suggest if you are just looking to have fun, then you should buy Cheap Soccer Shoes because they are cheap and still very durable. But be careful that most cheap shoes are made out of cow leather. The mid range shoes are made out of synthetic type of fake material and finally the most expensive are made out of poor kangaroo leather. When buying youth soccer shoes, don't overspend if the child is growing.

Depending on where you play you need to by cleats that have the "teeth" that are viable for the ground you are playing on. They sell turf, firm ground or soft ground teeth/cleats. So you as a buyer has to determine what best fits you.

How to Increase Football Speed and Get Faster Where It Counts - On the Football Field!

Most football speed training programs are in a very sad state. Their goals are off kilter...rather than being concerned with getting faster on the football field, they are concerned with getting better at the tests! It's football's version of No-Child Left Behind.

The whole concept of getting faster for football has been corrupted by gimmicks and guys looking to make a quick buck off of unsuspecting, impressionable football players by selling them flash without substance.

I'm not sure when the football world went crazy when it comes to speed training..

Honestly, at some point strength coaches flipped their lids...mostly fed by the regular coaches who started drooling over anyone with a fast 40.

But, as we see hundreds (yes, hundreds) of times each year, a fast 40 does not equal a great football player.

Every single year guys pack into the combines in the hopes of playing professional football. Some of them are talented players but not good enough to play for pay. Yet, they bring with them blazing fast 40 and end up getting cut.

But, that part doesn't get any press...only the 40 times do...

As a result, players are desperate to become faster and test well. And, in their desperation, fall prey to the vast landscape of speed training hucksters out there, all selling one gimmicky device after another.

From parachutes to towing tubes to speed training DVD's that are slickly produced but offer no results, it's a virtual mine-field out there for unsuspecting football players.

The biggest mistake when it comes to football speed training, by far is:

Using Linear Speed Training Models for Football

We are all training for football speed. We're football players and thus need to get faster on the field of play.

So, why do so many coaches promote speed training programs that are based on Track and Field programs?

Not sure when this started, but, it's really killed football training. The vast majority of football speed programs are based on the training of Track athletes. They focus 99.99% of their energies on linear,
straight-ahead speed.

That's fine for track, but, we're not into track here are we? No, we're
training to get faster for football.

Football is a game played in all directions from all angles at high speeds. Running in a straight line with text-book perfect form is a figment of someone's imagination. To truly get faster for football, you need to be able to be fast in all direction

Track Training Neglects Multi-Directional, Football Specific Speed

Track is run straight ahead...they have no reason to develop anything
but linear speed.

But, on the football field, that just won't cut it. You're a football player, you know that you have to run forward, laterally, backpedal, and at odd angles, sometimes in a stop-start fashion. To only train for straight ahead speed is an enormous mistake!

You absolutely must train for lateral speed by not only running laterally but jumping and lifting in the same motion.

Movements like:

Lateral Lunges
Lateral Sled Pulls
45-Degree Angle Lunge
Asterisks Lunges
Lateral Box Jumps
Shuffle Sled Pulls

When you add these movements to your training you will get faster for football. If you ignore them and only focus on Track-style training, you might run a good 40, but, you'll never be the best player you could be.

Top 10 Soccer Players in the World

Based on the FIFA player of the year, on the football news, football scores and football results, we succeeded in putting together a list of the top 10 football players in the world. Some picks might differ between a site and another since the football experts of ESPN.com or SI.com are way different from the soccer experts of Eurosport.com or CBSsports.

Here is our opinion about the best football players on the planet, starting with the best football player without any doubt, Lionel Messi.

1- Lionel Messi is an Argentinean football player who features for the FC Barcelona in the Spanish football league and other European football tournaments such as the Champions League. Lionel MEssi is among the most awaited football players during the World Cup 2010 due to his exceptional football shoes tricks and magical football skills.

2- Cristiano Ronaldo has newly joined the Real Madrid; after leading the Manchester United until the Champions League finals against Barcelona where the Man Utd lost, Ronaldos popularity was starting to decrease in the English Premier League. After being signed by Real Madrid, Ronaldo is also one of the best soccer players in the world, widely known for his goal scoring techniques and accurate strikers shots.

3- Zlatan Ibrahimovic just made it to FC Barcelona; as a football transfer between Barca and Inter Milan got tackled, Ibra was substituted by Samuel EtoO who was transferred towards the Italian League while Ibrahimovic got signed by the football team of Pep Guardiola.

4- Steven Gerrard or Stevie G is among the most dangerous football strikers in the world; as a captain of Liverpool, Gerrard is expected to lead the English football team in South Africa 2010 as the team tackles the FIFA World Cup under the supervision of Coach Fabio Capello.

5- Samuel Etoo features for Inter Milan; Etoo was the top scorer of Barcelona until the deal with Inter Milan obliged him to exchange places with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. In the World Cup 2010, Samuel Etoo will lead the Cameroon football team, perhaps crafting a new surprise by qualifying into the final rounds of the Fifa World Cup tournament.

6- KAKA quit playing for AC Milan and joined Real Madrid along with Cristiano Ronaldo to form one the most dangerous offensive lineups in the world; although Kaka occupies the midfield spot, he remains one of the most skilled strikers when it comes to scoring goals.

7- Xavi Hernandez of FC Barcelona is also one of the football players who won the Euro Championship with spain Vs Germany; Xavi is far from being the fastest football player or the most talented football player but his job in controlling the midfield of every football field grants him the title of one of the best midfielders in the world.

8- Andres Iniesta, Barca player, is considered as one of the main elements in the team; Guardiola counts on Inesta to deliver the balls towards the strikers. Iniesta, referring to football news and sports experts, is one of the most underrated football players in the world, maybe due to the lack of TV appearances or marketing and endorsement deals.

9- Frank Lampard, Chelsea football teams idol, is one of the most consistent and persistent football players on many levels. Eith
[removed][removed]
er in the EPL English Premier League fixtures or in the European football tournaments, the Chelsea midfield player has marked the English football with his skills and potential to create decent occasions and lead his team in the Premiership fixtures.

10- Fernando Torres, Spanish striker and one of the most talented goal scorers in the world, will be featuring along his Spanish team mates in the World cup 2010; after winning the European Championship with the Spaniards, Torres will have to demonstrate some real football skills to overcome his bad football results and low football scores with Liverpool throughout the Premier League and the Champions League.

As long as hold a match, no matter football, basketball, swimming and so on, people are very intrested in the misjudgment during the match. It is regular in early days which technology didn't so advanced, but in the era of high technology, it seems impossible and difficult to understand. Even the best referees vision can not see this subtle difference, but machine does, it can find out the most hidden failures which naked eye can not tell. This is why so many big game need to rely on high-tech, which can reduce misjudgment to zero. Based on the topic of robot replace human, people concerned if robot will replace vision in the football field.

Due to the misjudgment in the World Cup 2010, football fans who concerned their teams doubted the vision in the football field. offside, diving, Soccer Shoes out of bounds - these happened in each session of World Cup, even use high technology, events still happened after end of the game. This seems insignificant, but in the semi-finals, this misjudgment may cause serious result. So doubt of the authority of vision is not surprising. As a human, misjudgment is inevitable, whether it can inevitable or not is still unknown. Also will using robot change the nature of football game is the most important event for football fans.

Recently, this problem has been sloved by former UEFA president Lennart Johansson who would told that football game is for human not robot. He said "I believe in the idea that Platini put forward when he said we could have two extra men on the field, Perhaps two referees, but then one behind each goal standing there watching, who could see immediately when the ball is inside the line or not. I face facts that referees are human and humans make mistakes, This is a game for humans and not for robots. This classic conclusion slove the people's doubt. Belong to what he said, he do not agree the proposal of using robot in football field. But at the same time, in recognition of the mistakes, he suggest using high techongy to monitor competition quality. Also this classic topic explain the humanity of football game.

In football field, it is human's war. Eleven football players in the field to make goals using a small ball. The goal which team make more will win the match. Two referees in the sidelines to to monitoring competition. This tradition continues over thrity years accompany with Football Shoes from different brands. Intense competition accompany with skill discussion, atmosphere of tension all increase the ornamental of football game. Also the football shoes which football players worn fully proved that the humanity of football game.

Famous brands produce football shoes for players, not robot also. The intense war between Adidas and Nike football shoes focus on famous football stars like C Lo who speaksprison nike Mercurial Vapor, but his competetor Messi worn Adidas F50 i in the match. This will be the highlight for saling football shoes, the gossip news of fooball players can increase attention to football shoes too. And the popularity may indirect effects wonderful of football game. But if robot came into football field, the effect may reduce that people can not find their interesting in football game, no longer to football shoes. Even referees can be a selling point for brands to voice their new soccer shoes, if robot become referees, whole human industry may orderless.

The informantion of football rules increasing the confidence of football fans. Also the announce of football game really do effect to media, even the high technology invent everyday, people still the king of world, not robot.

The passion of football has delined after the finishing of World Cup. However, decreasing the temperature make it impossible to play football in winter. Commercialize factors penetrate into football industry promote football players to the multifaceted development, i.e. ads, entertainment. The result seriously affected the sales of Soccer Shoes, which has been proved to be the most important factor to complete brilliant performances.

Changes of weather also change the habits of human beings. Snow, wind and heavy wear all take away the passion of playing football, this may affect the improvement in football field. Even a lot of football fans choose the lastest football shoes which stars endorsement, little practice may also effect skill improvement. Some comments said winter is not the season to play football shaken the determination of foobtall fans, also affect the football shoes industry.

Doctors researched the importance of football shoes for several? years proved that football shoes is the most important factor for football players. Both great football match and injury cause in football shoes, which often ignore the health consideration by manufactors. After announce the importance of football shoes, the upsurge - purchase money on football shoes has never stopped in summer. Famous brands all produce football shoes to satisfied the demand of customers, for example, nike Mercurial Vapor 4 football shoes, which is the lightest and most advanced football shoes in Nike mercurial vapors. However, market case cold with the weather cooling, snows, wind and heavy wear make it impossible to play football outside, in the other word, serious affect the sales of football shoes. Even manufactors put health factors inside of soccer shoes can not reverse the inferior in the market. The begin of European Cup raise interest in football, but the cold still exist in football market. This may cause businessmen brains in festivals, object and also discount.

Cheap soccer shoes is a great news for those who can not afford expensive price of new soccer shoes, but want to own one. Also the cheap soccer shoes like a wing for parents to buy one for their children. As seasonal sport, the sales activity during festivals, like halloween, christmas increase the sales of football shoes which always high quality and stylish. However, this is the way business promotion, for customers, what you need to do is pulish your eyes to find the one really suit you or your children, information show that the unsuit of Football Shoes increase the opportunity to injury which usually ignore by parents.

The discuss whether winter really not conducive to the movement become the focus for football fans, who dreamed of being a famous star. However, this can not concluded at once, advice for those who has dream but lack perseverance - process is always difficult, if you? want to success, despite the psychology of cold weather, persist playing football with your teamates, you will be the best in the fature.

The long development of football game take the biggest happiness for football players. Even it invented from England, but people can not find the gentleman character during the football games. It was the contest of football skills, maybe injury but controled by human. So many yongers translate their ways into football games that bring the upsurge of buyying football shoes. It is known that football shoes is the most important factor in the football game. A good pair of football shoes can increase your speed, help you control football and also get goals.

Can you image that a football player worn running shoes without cleat in the sole playing football? The result may be very serious - he will fall down and even get injury during the match. How about basketball shoes? They may be wrong, football is a professional game that own pitch, specialized division of labor in football players. Also for the years development, manufactors found a way to reduce injury of football players - Football Shoes. There are so many brands produce football shoes in the market that it is not easy for customers find which one they need.

Most customers choose them from TV station, football players, ads and also shopping in the stores. But brands and stars effect may lead you to choose nike Mercurial Vapor which C Lo spokesprison at first. However, do you think that even powerful - are they really suit you? For Nike has formulated three levels of producing football shoes,

The basic-and cheapest-level of the Mercurial line (currently in its fourth production, hence the newest boots will have a "IV" after the name) is the Mercurial Steam, which are made with the cheapest materials and are just fine for growing children or people who are not sure they want to stay with the sport.

The next level up is nike Mercurial Talaria . These are much better constructed out of Teijin KING-75 synthetic leather and are a much better boot for the money. It is a very good football shoes, which line is one of the few that is constructed completely of blades, not round spikes. This allows for greater speed because you cut into the turf rather than gouging into it. The Talarias are not a bad compromise because they are still constructed with quality materials and have the same external heel-counter and separated front and back TPU plates for weight reduction as the Vapors.

The top-of-line Mercurial Vapors damned well better be. Constructed of supple Teijin microfiber leather, the Vapor weighs in at a mere 8.1 ounces! It has covered lacing and looks incredible. Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United--and arguably THE best player on the planet-wears these. They often used in the football match.

It told us that before choosing football shoes, it is important for you to find your level at first. Also for someone, they just advocate best - brand which is called the best in the football field, they will buy them. However, Adidas football shoes is the first and also called the best in the football field. Many youngers would like to buy Adidas F50 i to football games. May be it is the lightest, but you should test it in the football field. Control ball's ability, how about speed(general lightest may increase speed), reduce opportunity to injury, comfortable feeling of foot, permeability, all of which are the important factors to consider choosing football shoes.

Also keep it in mind that don't get a size too big to "grow into", all that will end up happening is that you will be unable to kick or run as well as you could with a good fitting boot. You may be saving money, but you will also be saving your best game. It can always pay to shop around to get the best prices and range of options. There's nothing worse than finding out you've been completely ripped off or you settled for the wrong Puma boot when you wanted a pair of Umbros all along. Cheap Soccer Shoes sometimes with genius quality is very worth to own.

It is your wisdom to find a good and best football shoes for you. A good football player is worth to own the best football shoe in the world.

Here is how you get much faster for football. The real, non-nonsense approach to football speed training, the kind that not only takes over a half second off your 40 but also helps you get faster where it counts - on the football field!

Getting faster for football really isn't that complicated. Somehow, football speed training has become more complex than advanced nuclear physics. As I wrote in the "3 Football Speed Training Myths, Busted" article, most football players are led astray by gimmick products like parachutes, cones and the dreaded track-influenced "Football Speed" programs.

The problem with most of the "get faster for football" Stuff out there is that 99% of the football speed training products out there focus on the 40-yard dash. Now, we all have to run the 40 during testing, so, investing in a testing preparation product like Joe DeFranco's DVD is a wise move. After all, some coaches put so much stock in your testing numbers that performing well could mean the difference between having a spot on the team and sitting on the bench.

But, I'm not concerned with testing speed right now. I'm talking game speed. The speed that gets D-lineman to the QB and gets Running Backs to the second level. This is the type of speed that wins games. Why some coaches over-rely on testing, I'll never know. As Chuck Knoll always says, "Watch the film, not the stopwatch!"

So, how do we go about building this kind of game speed? How do we really get faster for football? Glad you asked

To Really Get Faster For Football, Get Stronger

Why do guys hate hearing this? I swear, every time I write an article about how you need to get stronger in order to get faster rather than running around cones, I get venomous hate mail. Something about those little orange cones makes people happy.
Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but a heavy Deadlift will do more for your football speed than 10-million cones.

How strong you are determines how fast you are, at least to a point. The first argument weak, cone-running, parachute-wearing types come up with is that Elite Powerlifters, especially the super heavies aren't super fast. "Those guys Squat 1000lbs, they should be the fastest in the world!"

There is a point of diminishing returns. But, for many guys, this might be in excess of 700-lbs. When you can Squat that much, let me know and we'll figure out how to further increase your speed without lifting more. But, don't come to me with your massive 405 and proclaim that strength work isn't key to increasing speed.

If you want to get faster for football, you need to concentrate on getting stronger on exercises like Box Squats, Box Front Squats, Deadlifts and Deadlift Variations, Cleans, and Squats. Work them hard, Max Effort style. Continue to increase the weights and your flexibility (more on that later) and you will get faster.

In Bill Romonowski's book, he talks about working on his speed with a world famous track coach. Bill was only leg pressing at that time and coach told him to start Squatting. After a few weeks, Bill called and excitedly let the coach know that he hit 410. The coach replied, "good, now you can Squat as much as my female sprinters."

Train Hamstrings Heavy & for Speed

Your hamstrings are your speed muscles. The hams, along with the glutes, act as your engine out on the field. Yet, we still see people missing the boat on hamstring training. In training the hamstrings, keep a few key points in mind:

The hamstrings are made up of a high percentage of fast twitch fibers and must be trained heavily. They tend to respond best to low medium reps.
If you've been neglecting them, the hams will have to be worked more often until they catch up to the more powerful Quads.
Your hamstrings are made up of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, & semimenbranosus muscles all must be worked for maximum speed
The hamstrings must be worked from multiple angles with a variety of exercises

The hamstrings must be attacked. Plan on working them at least twice per week. Exercises like Deadlifts, Snatch Deadlifts, Box Squats, Romanian Deadlifts, Kettlebell Swings and Power Cleans are what build football speed. Not running over hurdles in a tinfoil hat. These must be done heavily in order to get the kind of speed you desire.
Now, with that in mind, the hamstrings must also be trained dynamically. Most players never stop and think about the insane force we place on our hams during a game. Thus, we must prepare them for those forces by training the hams specifically for speed.
Building crazy stength in your legs is the first step in getting faster for football. But, as many a disapointed lifter has found out, it's not the only one.

You must also work your legs in a dynamic wayor, simply put, you must do speed-specific exercises. No, I don't mean "speed exercises" where you run with a vest on or pulling your teammate around.

I'm talking about speed exercises in the weightroom.

Things like:

Box Squats
Kettlebell Swings
Cleans
Snatch Pulls
Box Front Squats

You must, after a certian point, add chains or bands to the bar as well. This is not for the beginner, so we'll save that for later. But, the point is, you must train for speed. How do you do this?

3 or 4 days after your heavy leg day, you do a speed day. Simply use your main exercise for the day, i.e., Box Squats, and do them for speed. Take about 60% of your max Box Squat and sit back and explode off the box as fast as humanly possiblethen go a little faster. Keep rest periods short (around 60-seconds)

Do this for 12 sets of 2 reps. I know; sounds easy. But, by set 6 the "WTF" factor comes into play.

There's been debate over using the Olympic Lifts in place of Dynamic Effort. There's no debate. Use both and shut up about it.

Power Cleans and Power Snatches are great ways to buildhmmmPOWER!

Are they hard to teach? Maybe. But, getting an athlete to do a passable Power Clean isn't complicated. Deadlift off the floor, accelerate and jump once the bar passes the knees and catch it on your shoulders/upper chest.
Also, don't overlook leg curls. We do need to train the hams at this angle, but, the leg curl machines leave a lot to be desired. The solution is to turn to bands.

Band Leg Curls have the huge advantage over machines because you can easily go full speed in both the eccentric and concentric portion. Choke a band around a rack, step back until there's tension, then curl. You can do these one leg at a time or two, standing or seated.

Build Insane Starting Strength

Building starting strength is key to being faster for football. We usually refer to this as explosivenessthat ability to turn on all those muscle fibers to full power in an instant. This is so important, but the vast majority of strength programs I see totally neglect this!

Look, we don't have time to ramp up to full speed on the football field. We have to be able to go from 0 to 100 in a split second. To do this, we need to include exercises that build explosiveness and starting strength.

Remember that kid you used to play sandlot football withhe was fast but when he went out for football, he never made it. Wanna know why? Beause he was fast after a 10 yard ramp up. He had no starting strength.

If you're a lineman and you don't have sufficent starting strength, forget it. You're done.

Building this type of strength is actually very uncomplicatedthough it's not easy. It, of course, takes hard work and balls.

There's 3 ways to build crazy starting strength -

1. Deadlift and Pulls off the Floor and Box Squatting
2. Squat from a Dead-Stop the Bottom of the Rack (or suspended off of chains)
3. Squat/Pull with lots of band tension added to the bar

Starting to see a pattern here? How many times have I already mentioned Squats and Deadlifts? Yes, these are what make you faster for football my friends.
We already covered doing Deadlifts and Box Squatting, so we'll skip #1.

#2 is pretty easy to set up. Set the bar on the saftey catches in the power rack right where the bottom ofa Squat or Front Squat would be for you. Now, get under the bar, get tight, and explode up. Simple and extremely effective. You can do this with chainsit's a little harder to set up, but, it gives you more flexibility as far as starting positions.

Squatting and Pulling against bands is nothing new to most of the readers here. It's a great way to build explosiveness and teach the body to accelerate. Using them wisely can greatly increase your speed. If you're new to bands, I suggest using Elite's new Short Bands. Easier to set up for the beginner and much easier to manage to get even tension on both sides of the bar.

Build Football Speed Specific Flexibility

If you're tight, you're slow. You must perform both dynamic and passive stretching if you want to maximize speed. Trust me, no one hates stretching more than me, I've seen plays more exciting than a half hour of stretching, honest to God, Plays!

But, it must be done. A muscle that is contracted cannot contract further

You need to concentrate your flexibility training on the:

Hip Flexors tight Hip Flexors are often called "breaks"
Calfs
Hamstrings
Hips Tight hips = tight hamstrings = low back pain = a slow you

You should be stretching the entire body but pay special attention to those areas. Honestly, taking a Yoga class is the best thing you can do on your off days.

Unmanly? Consider that Walter Payton and Hershel Walker both took ballet to become more agile. Are you better than Walter Payton? Good, then go take a Yoga class, tough guy.
Aim for 2 3 sessions of 20-minutes of passive stretching per week. This is easily done on your non-lifting days.

Maximum Force to the Bar

Ah, yes, this is the big one. If there's been one area where the HIT Jedis, the Crossfit Cults, and the Wobble Board Wrecking Crew have succeeded in convincing young, impressionable football players that lifting heavy will slow you down.

It usually involves them pointing to a video of some huge Powerlifter Deadlifting 700+ and screaming, "See! Look how slow that bar is moving! That's why lifting heavy makes you slownow, come stand on this wooden skateboard and do a Clean & Jerk with an Indian Club and a half-Kettlebell"

What they miss is the intent to move the bar fast that counts. This might be the simplest concept in strength training yet so many miss it. Just try to lift the bar as fast as possible, every set, every rep, every exercise. You need to train your Central Nervous System to act fast. When it gets the message that we need to move several hundred pounds quickly, it can easily figure out to move just your bodyweight pretty damn fast. Try lifting a heavy weight slowly and see what happens.

When I get high school players telling me they were taught to lift the bar with a 4 seconds up and 3 seconds down bar speed, my head explodes. They wonder why they can't get faster! Well, they just spent an entire off-season teaching their brain, body and muscles to be slow, what else would you expect.

Dave Tate wrote something to the effect of, "Warm up sets should feel like maxes and maxes should feel like warm up sets." That, my friends, does a hell of a job summing it up.

Use Plyometrics to Build Explosive Football Speed

Plyos are great for getting faster and more explosive for football. But, I'm always a little hesitant to write about them. Why? Well, mention plyos and next thing you know, guys are buying 10-grand worth of Plyo equipment, complete with more wires, cables, and jumping platforms than the set of the Matrix.

Plyometrics, by definition are exercises that allow the muscle to reach maximum strength
in as short a period of time as possible. Re-read that and think of its applications to
football training! That's what it's all about.

Producing as much force as possible, as fast as possible.

Adding something as simple as Box Jumps will do wonders for building football game-speed. They teach reactive ability, explosiveness, and acceleration. If all you did was simple Box Jumps, Multiple Box Jumps and Lateral Jumps, you'd be light-years ahead of your competition and much faster on the football field.

Start off with Sub-Maximal drills like simple bounding, hopping, Standing Long Jumps add them to your warm-up along with High-Knees, Butt-Kicks, Walking Lunges, etc. Then begin to progress to simple Box Jumps. Once you feel comfortable leaping onto one box, add more. Now, this is where guys go wrong.

The time spent on the ground in-between boxes is critical! If the ground time
is too long when doing Plyo jumps, the exercise loses its effectiveness. I've seen so many young football players doing multiple box jumps.

They hit the first box, drop down and then pause for sometimes over a full second! The time you spend on the ground must be as close to 0 as possible. Hit and react. Delaying the next jump reduces the stretch reflex. If you do this in training, your CNS will learn it and it will have you do the same on the field.

Coaches can use a simple verbal queue to get the guys moving quickly. Also, make sure the guys step off the box, not jump.
The easiest way to break into plyos is to use them after your warm up, before your strength training sessions. So, before a heavy leg day, start off with 3 sets of 3 5 Box Jumps. This is a great way to get your players ready for more advanced movements and for the larger volumes of jumps that they'll progress to.

Play Games

This is by far the most underutilized form of both football speed and conditioning. We come up with complex training programs, books and books about conditioning methods, and buy every lame speed training device on the market but we overlook the most obvious way to improve game speed (and conditioning)play a damn game!
We have an entire off-season to train in the weight room. Guys are lifting, running, doing plyos, working hardlet them have some fun and improve speed and conditioning (don't tell them they're actually working though).

See, lining up for some 4-on-4 (or any combination of guys) and playing touch or flag football in the off-season is a tremendous way to get the players to train their bodies to be fast in football-specific situations. As long as they are doing things correctly (WR's run crisp routes, DB's cover correctly, RB's use good mechanics, etc.) then they will improve greatly. It's also an amazing way to get guys who bitch and complain after running 3 sprints to go out and run at full speed for 90-minutes.

I stumbled across this years ago when I was making the transition from D-line to Tight End. I was fast enough and could catch, but, I didn't move like a receiver.

So, every day I went out with one of our QB's and usually another receiver, Linebacker or D-back. We would rotate and essentially run 5 sets of 10 pass routes. Sometimes the sessions would have 10-on-10 complete with lineman blocking (and occasionally catching passes, glory hogs).

After a few months the difference was unreal. I was able to make adjustments mid-air, turn and catch balls thrown behind me, and was overall just more agile. I was making moves that no respectable 260-lb man would every make. So was everyone else, including the lineman. And, we all could easily play both ways without as much as breathing hard.
All this gave every position speed specific to what they need on the field. LB'rs got to cover TE's and Backs. This had them running in real, football-specific patterns and, combined with all the strength training they were doing, make them much, much faster.

If you want to give this a shot, start small. Get a QB, WR and maybe a DB. Throw, catch, run, repeat. Soon more guys will join in and everyone will benefit immensely from the improved game speed and agility. This seems insane to say, but, yes, playing football will make you better at playing football.

Imbued in English culture is a love and inventor of Sports of all kinds.

I have a website where I have listed and linked to the 100+ various sports and games created by us Brits. Our national game is Football which It is believed was first played over a 1,000 years ago in English villages up and down the country. There are stories that villager's played against villager's and the aim of the game was to get the ball passed the opposing village boundary line. The rules included kicking, punching, scratching the opposition over and above the kicking of the ball.

1280 AD - Earliest form of ball kicking

The earliest recorded form of ball kicking was recorded in England in 1280 AD at Ulgham near Ashington in Northumberland. A player was killed by running into an opposing players dagger.

1314 AD - The first banning of Football

In 1314, comes the earliest reference to a game called football when Nicholas de Farndone Lord Mayor of the City of London issued a decree on behalf of King Edward II banning football. It was written in the French used by the English upper classes at the time. A translation reads: "For as much as there is great noise in the city caused by hustling over large foot balls in the fields of the public from which many evils might arise which God forbid: we command and forbid on behalf of the king, on pain of imprisonment, such game to be used in the city in the future."

1409 AD First banning of betting on Football

In 1409 King Henry IV of England gives us the first documented use of the English word "football" when issued a proclamation forbidding the levying of money for "foteball".

1481 AD - Earliest description of Football Game At the end of the 15th century comes the earliest description of a football game. This account in Latin of a football game contains a number of features of modern football and comes from Cawston, Nottinghamshire, England. It is included in a manuscript collection of the miracles of King Henry VI of England. Although the precise date is uncertain it certainly comes from between 1481 and 1500. This is the first account of an exclusively "kicking game" and the first description of dribbling. "The game at which they had met for common recreation is called by some the foot-ball game. It is one in which young men, in country sport, propel a huge ball not by throwing it into the air but by striking it and rolling it along the ground, and that not with their hands but with their feet... kicking in opposite directions" The chronicler gives the earliest reference to a football field, stating that: "The boundaries have been marked and the game had started.

1526 AD - First Football Boots In 1526 comes the first record of a pair of football boots occurs when Henry VIII of England ordered a pair from the Great Wardrobe in 1526. Unfortunately these are no longer in existence.

1581 AD - First organised Team Sport In 1581 comes the earliest account of football as an organised team sport. Richard Mulcaster, a student at Eton College in the early 16th century and later headmaster at other English schools provides the earliest references to teams ("sides" and "parties"), positions ("standings"), a referee ("judge over the parties") and a coach "(trayning maister)". Mulcaster's "footeball" had evolved from the disordered and violent forms of traditional football:

[s]ome smaller number with such overlooking, sorted into sides and standings, not meeting with their bodies so boisterously to trie their strength: nor shouldring or shuffing one an other so barbarously ... may use footeball for as much good to the body, by the chiefe use of the legges.

Mulcaster also confirms that in sixteenth century England football was very popular and widespread: it had attained "greatnes. .. [and was] much used ... in all places"

Despite this violence continued to be a problem. For example, the parish archives of North Moreton, Oxfordshire for May 1595 state: "Gunter's son and ye Gregorys fell together by ye years at football. Old Gunter drew his dagger and both broke their heads, and they died both within a fortnight after."

1600 AD - First reference to Scoring a Goal

The first direct references to scoring a goal come from England in the 1600s. For example, in John Day's play 'The Blind Beggar of Bethnal Green (performed circa 1600; published 1659): "I'll play a gole at camp-ball" (an extremely violent variety of football, which was popular in East Anglia. Similarly in a poem in 1613, Michael Drayton refers to "when the Ball to throw, And drive it to the Gole, in squadrons forth they goe".

1602 AD First reference to Passing the Ball In 1602 the earliest reference to a game involving passing the ball comes from cornish hurling. In particular Carew tells us that: "Then must he cast the ball (named Dealing) to some one of his fellowes". In this case, however, the pass is by hand, as in rugby football. Although there are other allusions to ball passing in seventeenth century literature, this is the only one which categorically states that the ball was passed to another member of the same team. There are no other explicit references to passing the ball between members of the same team until the 1860s, however, in 1650 English puritan Richard baxter alludes to player to player passing of the ball during a football game in his book Everlasting Rest: "like a Football in the midst of a crowd of Boys, tost about in contention from one to another".

1608 AD Outlawing of Football in Cities

Football continued to be outlawed in English cities, for example the Manchester Lete Roll contains a resolution, dated 12 October 1608: "That whereas there hath been heretofore great disorder in our towne of Manchester, and the inhabitants thereof greatly wronged and charged with makinge and amendinge of their glasse windows broken yearlye and spoyled by a companye of lewd and disordered psons vsing that unlawfull exercise of playinge with the ffote-ball in ye streets of ye sd toune breakinge many men's windowes and glasse at their plesures and other great enormyties. Therefore, wee of this jurye doe order that no manner of psons hereafter shall play or use the footeball in any street within the said toune of Manchester, subpnd to evye one that shall so use the same for evye time xiid".

Although football was frequently outlawed in England, it remained popular even with the ruling classes. For example, during the reign of King James I of England James Howelll mentions how Lord Willoughby and Lord Sunderland enjoyed playing football, for example:"Lord Willoughby, and he, with so many of their servants ... play'd a match at foot- ball against such a number of Countrymen, where my Lord of Sunderland being busy about the ball, got a bruise in the breast.

1624 AD First concept of Football Teams

The concept of football teams is mentioned by English Poet Edmund Waller in c1624: He mentions a "a sort [i.e. company] of lusty shepherds try their force at football, care of victory... They ply their feet, and still the restless ball, Toss'd to and fro, is urged by them all". The last line suggests that playing as a team emerged much earlier in English football than previously thought.

1638 AD - Popularity of Football

Football continued to be popular throughout seventeenth century England. For example in 1634 Davenant is quoted (in Hones Table-Book) as remarking, "I would now make a safe retreat, but methinks Jam stopped by one of your heroic gamea called football; which I conceive (under your favor) not very conveniently civil in the streets, especially in such irregular and narrow roads as Crooked Lane. Yet it argues your courage, much like your military pastime of throwing at cocks, since you have long allowed these two valiant exercises in the streets". Similarly in 1638 Thomas Randolp suggests this in the following lines from one of his plays: "Madam, you may in time bring down his legs To the just size, now overgrown with playing Too much at foot-ball".

1660 AD First Objective study of Football In 1660 comes the first objective study of football, given in Francis Willughby's Book of Sports, written in about 1660. This account is particularly noteworthy as he refers to football by its correct name and is the first to describe the following: goals and a pitch ("a close that has a gate at either end. The gates are called Goals"), tactics ("leaving some of their best players to guard the goal"), scoring ("they that can strike the ball through their opponents' goal first win") and the way teams were selected ("the players being equally divided according to their strength and nimbleness"). He is the first to describe a law of football: "They often break one another's shins when two meet and strike both together against the ball, and therefore there is a law that they must not strike higher than the ball". His book includes the first (basic) diagram illustrating a modern football pitch.

Football continued to be played in the later seventeenth century, even in cities such as London. The great diarist Samuel Pepys, for example, states in 1665 that in a London street "the streete being full of footballs"

1840's AD - Codified Football England was the first country in the world to develop codified football, coming about from a desire of its various public schools to compete against each other. Previously, each school had its own rules, which may have dated back to the fifteenth or sixteenth centuries. The first attempts to come up with single codes probably began in the 1840s, with various meetings between school representatives attempting to come up with a set of rules with which all would be happy. The first attempt was The Cambridge Rules, created in 1848; others developed their own sets, most notably Sheffield F.C. (1855) and J.C. Thring(1862). These were moulded into one set in 1863 when the Football Association was formed; though some clubs continued to play under the Sheffield Rules 1878, and others dissented to form Rugby Union instead. The 1863 rules of the Football Association provides the first reference in the English Language to the verb to "pass" a ball.

1866 AD First Player to be Ruled Offside C.W.Alcock became the first footballer ever to be ruled off side on 31 March 1866, confirming that players were probing ways of exploiting the new off side rule right from the start. The offside rule was introduced in 1866 into the Football Association rules. It was almost identical to the one that had been part of the Cambridge Rules.

The early Sheffield Rules were particularly important as their offside system allowed poaching or sneaking and thus demonstrated the use of the forward pass: Players known as "kick throughs" were positioned permanently near the opponents goal to receive these balls. According to C.W. Alcock the Sheffield style gave birth to the modern passing game. The Sheffield Rules of 1862later included both crossbars and half time and free kicks were introduced to their code in 1866.

1867 AD The Oldest Football Cup in the World The Youdan Cup was an association football competition played in Sheffield, England. A local theatre owner Thomas Youdan sponsored the competition and provided the trophy. The trophy itself was made of silver, and although Thomas Youdan awarded a 2 prize to the winner of a competition to design the trophy, it was not completed in time to be presented on the day to the winners.

The format of the competition was drawn up by a committee and played under Sheffield Rules. The first two rounds were on a knock-out basis, however the final was contested between three teams playing each other in turn.

The final was played at Bramell Lane, Sheffield on 5 March 1867 and attracted 3,000 spectators, each paying 3d admission. The game used the concept of 'rouges' (a rouge was scored when an attempt at goal, using a goal only 4 yards wide, missed, but would have gone into an 8 yard wide goal: rouges were only considered in the case of a drawn match), and Hallam beat Norfolk and Mackenzie to finish first, while Norfolk beat Mackenzie and finished second. The Runners-up were presented with a two-handed silver goblet encircled with athletic figures that had been purchased with the proceeds of the gate money and had been completed. Sadly Youdan was unable to present it personally as he was ill.

1870 AD The first International England was home to the first ever international football match on the 5 March 1870. The first match ended in a draw and was one of a series of four matches between representatives of England and Scotland at The Oval, London. These matches were arranged by the Football Association, at the time the only national football body in the world.

The origin of these games came in 1870 when CW Alcock challenged homegrown contenders in Scotland against an English eleven. These challenges were issued in Scottish newspapers, including the Glasgow Herald. He received no response to these adverts. One response to Alcock's challenges illustrates that soccer was eclipsed in Scotland by other codes:

"Mr Alcock's challenge to meet a Scotch eleven on the borders sounds very well and is doubtless well meant. But it may not be generally well known that Mr Alcock is a very leading supporter of what is called the "association game"...devotees of the "association" rules will find no foemen worthy of their steel in Scotland".

As a result he was forced to draw upon London-based players with Scottish origins. One notable Scottish player of the 1870 and 1871 games was Smith, a player of Queensn Park FC. This suggests that southern teams were not so isolated from Glasgow players and style of play as originally thought. Alcock was categorical that although most players were London based, this was due to lack of response from north of the border:

"I must join issue with your correspondent in some instances. First, I assert that of whatever the Scotch eleven may have been composed the right to play was open to every Scotchman [Alcock's italics] whether his lines were cast North or South of the Tweed and that if in the face of the invitations publicly given through the columns of leading journals of Scotland the representative eleven consisted chiefly of Anglo-Scotians ... the fault lies on the heads of the players of the north, not on the management who sought the services of all alike impartially. To call the team London Scotchmen contributes nothing. The match was, as announced, to all intents and purposes between England and Scotland". The first official ( i.e. Currently recognised by FIFA) international match would take place between Scotland and England on November 30th. 1872. This match was played under the Football Association rules.

1871 AD The F.A.Cup The F.A. Cup was the first nationally organized competition. A knockout cup, it began 1871, with the first winners being the Wanderers. In those days professionalism was banned, and the cup was dominated by service teams or old schoolboys' teams (such as Old Etonians). In the early 1870s the modern team passing game was invented by the Sheffield FC, Royal Engineers A.F.C. and Scottish players of the era from Queens Park FC. This was the predecessor to the current passing, defensive game which was known as the Combination Game and was spread around the world by British expatriates.

1888 AD Worlds First Football League The new professionals needed more regular competitive football in which they could compete, which led to the creation of the Football league in 1888 by Aston Villa director William McGregor . This was dominated by those clubs who had supported professionalism, and the twelve founding members consisted of six from Lancashire (Blackburn Rovers, Burnely, Bolton Wanderers, Accrington, Everton and preston North End) and six from the Midlands (Aston Villa, Derby County, Notts County, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers). No sides from the South or London initially participated.

Preston North End won the first ever Football League championship without losing any of their 22 fixtures, and won the FA Cup to complete the double. They retained their league title the following year but by the turn of the 20th century they had been eclipsed by Aston Villa, who had emulated Preston's double success in 1897. Other Midlands sides, such as Wolves (1893 FA Cup winners) and West Bromwich Albion (1888 & 1892 FA Cup winners) were also successful during this era, as were Blackburn Rovers, who won five FA Cups in the 1880s and 1890s. In 1892 a second division was added and in 1920 a third division was added.

1891 AD Creation of Football Net In 1891 Liverpool engineer John Alexander Brodie invented the football net.

1991- Present In 1991 the English Premier league was formed of 20 clubs and with its links to Sky television and the increase in revenues by 2001 The Premier league was the richest league of any kind of sports in the world. At the present day, the league's TV rights have reached over 2 Billion Pounds. The argument at present is when will technology be used around the goal to confirm problem goals by Video replay.

It always amazes me how from a little Island like England we created and gave the world over 100 sports and games that have dominated the world.

INTRODUCTION

The fans of the South Eastern Conference take their college football very seriously. Year in and year out they lead the country, dominating overall attendance records. In 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 the conference drew more than 5.5 million fans at its home games; a national record for a conference. Football Fanatics, you bet, and they wear the badge proudly.

I on the other hand reside at the other end of this spectrum. My parents were not sports people and it simply was not part of our family structure. I would half-heartedly follow our local sports teams but only if it was convenient. If the game was on and I happened to be sitting in front of the television then great, or if there was a radio handy I might tune in. Never in my wildest dreams could I have envisioned the journey on which I would embark with my own child.

TYPICAL PARENTS

Like most baby-boom-era parents my wife Stacy and I were determined to expose our children to everything we could from sports to music to dance to theatre to whatever. Following the generational trend, we wanted to afford our kids those things that we simply did not have available to us as children. It is amazing how much has changed over the course of only a few decades. What really accentuated this point was one Christmas when Santa brought a Game-Boy for Willy, my eldest of three; while he was sitting there on the floor playing Ninja Turtles he looked up at me and asked if I played Game-Boy when I was little? That simple, innocent question tells the whole tale. Game-Boy - PS2 - Xbox 360 - Wii, heck, all I had access to was Pong which came onto the scene when I was about eleven years old; my cousin had one so the only time I was able to play it was when I went to visit him. I try to explain to my children that the first time I had access to a computer was in college. We had to sign up for computer time which often was in the wee hours of the morning. They look at me, while texting a message to their friend, as if I am speaking a foreign language. Even our vocabulary has changed; is texting a proper word?

Growing up in the inner city during the late sixties - early seventies the only organized sporting activities available to me were baseball, basketball and football. Tennis and golf were primarily for those belonging to a country club, hockey and soccer simply did not exist and opportunities for swimming, track, wrestling and volleyball were not available until high school. Today children have instant access to the world and exposure to almost anything; baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball, swimming, scouting, piano, you name it. I told my children early on that they could participate in anything except football and boxing. My wife and I were determined that our children participate in something; what they chose was for the most part up to them. The risk of chronic and even severe injury from football is just too high and boxing is just plain lunacy. Had Extreme Fighting existing during that time it would have been prohibited as well. Everything else was fair game.

WHO KNEW?

Jump ahead about ten years. Alex, my middle child, came home from school one day and told me that he had joined the football team, catching me off-guard and momentarily speechless. He knew the rules, football was off limits. 'Really, what position?' I asked. I'm going to kick, he explained, assuring me that it is the safest position on the roster; kickers never get hurt. I then asked how this came about. Alex's gym class was outside on the football field where he and a few of his buddies, who were already on the team, were goofing around kicking field goals. As it turns out Alex was popping them through the uprights, with ease, from thirty five yards out so his buddies suggested he try out for the team; the coach obviously liked what he saw and Alex became the starting varsity kicker his senior year.

WE'RE FOOTBALL PEOPLE NOW

The most ironic part of this journey is that prior to Alex joining the football team I had never attended a high school football game as an adult and attended only a handful as a student. Perhaps if I had friends on the football team when I was in high school or dated a cheerleader the Friday night games would have drawn my interest.

For all practical purposes high school football was a new experience for me so naturally I had no idea what to expect. I figured that my family and I would attend the games, watch our son kick a few balls and enjoy an evening out. My wife on the other hand jumped in with both feet and did not look back. From the very first game Stacy looked and acted like a veteran football mom. She wore the traditional red, white and black scarf displaying the school colors along with the big button proudly pinned to her chest showing off a photograph of her son in his football uniform. Number fifteen, that's MY child. The photo-button is the official badge of honor for all of the mothers with children who are members of the team, the various cheerleading squads and the marching band. It truly is a beautiful sight to look into the stands and see a wall of moms sporting big photo-buttons accented with red, white and black scarves. Simply put, football is addictive. There is so much emotional purity involved at this level that you cannot help but get caught up in all the excitement. I think the reason for this is that the fans are more vested than at the college or professional level; the high school setting is much more intimate. Parents are obviously going to cheer for their children regardless of level or venue, but the true difference rests with the kids in the stands. They are rooting for friends that they grew up with, friends whose birthday parties they attended and sofas they slept on. These are the same kids who were lab partners in science class and were teammates on the recreational soccer team. The kids on the field and the kids in the stands have literally known each other all their lives. This depth of connection on such a wide scale simply cannot occur at the college or professional level. The kids being raised within the same community is what makes high school sports so special and unique.

From the time my children reached middle school my opening line when I got home would be the same; "How was school, do you have any homework?" Now though, now that we're football people there is an added wrinkle. When I speak to Alex it is, "How was school, do you have any homework, how did you kick today?" Like I can advise him if he proclaims that he did not kick well in practice? The only piece of advice I would be able to give that made any sense at all would be to keep your eye on the ball; how profound and utterly obvious. But it was important for me to get a progress report. I wanted to be involved; I needed to be involved, for we're football people now.

DEJA VU

My parents lived ten to fifteen minutes from us yet, when our children were little it would take us forty five minutes to get everyone situated for a ten minute ride. Attending our son's football games resulted in a similar ordeal. We graduated from a checklist of formula, diapers, toys, snacks, juice bottles and extra clothes to stadium chairs, blankets, gloves, hats, umbrella and directions. The one constant was that someone always had to use the restroom at the last minute just as we were ready to walk out the door. A few things in life transcend gender - religion - geography - nationality - economic status - education and language; having a family member run to the bathroom just as you are ready to leave the house can be deemed a universal truth.

THE PORK PIE HAT

When my children were old enough to attend school I went out and purchased a black leather Pork Pie hat which I would dutifully wear to all of their outdoor events. Initially, I wanted to wear a Dr. Seuss hat but my wife said I looked silly; my kids thought it was funny. The Pork Pie is a cool looking hat which I still wear to this day. The main reason I bought it was so my children could easily find me in a crowd. If we ever got separated, just look for the odd looking hat. In a sea of baseball caps my Pork Pie hat stuck out like a sore thumb. It worked well and my children got used to the idea. As they grew older and started playing organized sports they would use the hat to easily find me in the stands. Alex tells me he still looks for the hat while standing on the sideline. Old habits die hard.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

Being a disciple of the 'Just in Time' theory the parking lot is already packed as we approach the stadium, so once again I am relegated to waiting in line to drop off my family at the front entrance then park the car. Most nights, the nearest parking spot is a quarter of a mile away which is not a problem unless it is 30 degrees and windy or pouring rain. Unfortunately, I got to experience both. As I make my way to the field I pass a used car lot full of automobiles neatly arranged on the grass between the 'No Parking on Grass' signs. The scope of influence the football program has on local law enforcement is impressive. I purchase my ticket and call my wife to find out where she is sitting. Thank heaven for cell phones, without them I may not find her until halftime when the stampede occurs to line up for pretzels, hot dogs and the all important restroom.

A high school football game is a roller coaster of emotion and excitement from waiting for the team to run onto the field through the tunnel of cheerleaders, crashing through the home made banner - to the halftime show featuring both high school marching bands - to the end of the game when the entire football team runs over to the stands in front of the marching band to pay homage to one another as the band plays the school's fight song. I have come to realize that this spectacle simply has to be experienced first hand to be appreciated and understood. The electricity and energy of a live high school game is invigorating. Boys without shirts, chests painted all screaming at their counterparts across the field - the opposing bands dueling back and forth, these kids were having the time of their lives and it was easy to get caught up in their drama. It made me wonder what I had missed when I was in high school; perhaps Alex, by being a part of the football team is affording me the opportunities I missed out on when I was a student? Maybe it is better this way, as an adult I appreciate it more.

V.I.P.

A dominating high school team brings a celebrity status not only to the players but their parents as well. All of a sudden people I had known only in passing were stopping to partake in detailed conversation with me; at the gas station, the grocery store, and coffee house. Alex is really kicking well, have any colleges approached him yet? Wow, Alex is having a great season I didn't know he could kick like that. Truth be told, I didn't know it either? He must have inherited it from his mother. It is a great feeling being the parent of an athlete. You cannot help but stick out your chest with pride when you hear others in the stands cheering on your son and yelling his name. It turned out to be an experience I never could have anticipated. I savored every minute. In addition I had the good fortune by sheer happenstance, of experiencing events a-typical to a normal football season like watching Alex set a new school record by booming a 48 yard field goal with one second left in the half to helping his team win a State Championship posting a flawless 16-0 record; moments like these are indeed rare.

PRICELESS

Alex told me the highlight of the season was playing the conference championship game at Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I cannot imagine how cool it is to play in a professional football stadium, I can tell you though as a parent of one of the players, it is an awesome experience to watch. To sit in the stands and watch your son on that field, kicking up the same dirt as Hines Ward and booming field goals through the same uprights as Jeff Reed is surreal. Ticket to the game - $10, soft pretzel with mustard - $4.50, hot dog and drink - $7.50, watching Alex, larger than life on the Jumbo-Tron, running off the field pumping his fist after burying a field goal - priceless.

As impressive as watching Alex play at Heinz Field was, the highlight for me came several months later at the Pennsylvania East-West All Star Game. When I saw Alex run out of the tunnel onto the field my jaw literally dropped. I was stunned, almost paralyzed from the sharp chill piercing through my body; I was covered with goose bumps. There it was, as plain as day sprawled across the back of my son's shoulders; ROMANIAS. His name, my name was on the back of his jersey. I was overwhelmed; I never saw my name on the back of a jersey before yet there it was staring at me, taunting me, seducing me. Seeing my name on the back of that jersey was a profound experience. It caught me completely off guard; it was phenomenal. Several times during the course of the game I would lean over to remind my wife just how cool it was to see my name on the back of that jersey.

WHAT A RIDE

Who could have imagined that kicking field goals in gym class for fun would have resulted in such a magical journey? Prior to this season the last high school football game I attended was in 1978 when I was a junior. Now, we're football people.

Next stop, college; I guess Stacy will have to get another big photo-button and a new scarf while I dust off the Pork Pie hat. Thanks for the ride son!

A lot of people watched Dan Marino play football. Marino set a record for the most completions in a season (362) and became the first quarterback ever to throw for over 5,000 yards, reaching a total of 5,084. In the playoffs, the 14-2 Dolphins beat the Seattle Seahawks 31-10, then goes on to defeat Pittsburgh 45-28 in the AFC Championship game, with Dan throwing for 421 yards and four TD's. They did lose in the Super Bowl to the San Francisco 49ers in a hard fought game for the Miami Dolphins. Dan is named to the Pro Bowl. Marino had a unique ability to read the defenses quickly before setting up to throw and his skill of quickly releasing the ball made it very difficult for defenders to sack him.

Dan Marino was a Player of American football, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He was considered a great QB for the Miami Dolphins. In the 1984 season he gained 5084 yards passing. He passed for 48 touchdowns. These were NFL records at the time when Marino performed these feats. Dan Marino has over 400 TD passes and over 58,000 passing yards in his NFL career. Marino never won a Super Bowl. He announced his retirement in 2000.

Dan was an exceptional athlete as a young teen. In high school he played quarterback for his high school football team. He was selected to the High School All America team in 1978, which is sponsored by Parade. He was recruited to play football by numerous major universities. The Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball drafted him. At the end of the day he decided to attend college at the University of Pittsburgh, which allowed him to be close to the place he grew up.

While in college Dan was no slouch, because he broke all kinds of college passing records from passing yards to touchdowns. He earns All-American honors his junior year. The university retired Dan's jersey in 1982, after his senior season.

A few of the greatest honors that Dan Marino has received was having his high school honor him by retiring his football jersey and when his grade school's football field was names after him.

The great high school all-American game of the year happens Jan 9th. at noon when at least six future Horns take part in the US Army All-American Bowl, covered by NBC. No expected new commits for Texas at the game but it will be a chance for fans to see a bunch of future Longhorns compete against top notch talent. The 10th Army All-American Bowl kicks off at 1pm in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas today representing one of the last college football fixes until the Spring games come around.

The most interesting commits to watch may be quarterback Connor Wood and running back Traylon Shead. In these wide open all-star games the quarterback (QB) and running back (RB) are two of the spots to see the best reflection of a players actual capabilties. Today will be a great chance to see what Shead, one of the most prolific running backs in the history of Texas high school football, from tiny Cayuga can do against the countrys best.

On the defensive side of the ball keep an eye out for defensive end Reggie Wilson and linebacker Tevin Jackson. Both players are superb athletes who can dance around the football field. With the higher number of passes in the game plans there will be lots of chances for Wilson to get after the quarterback.

Although only five Buckeye targets are playing in the US Army All-American Bowl, or six if Norwell is included, two of them plan to announce where they will be taking their extraordinary talents for the next few years or more.

The first defensive back Latwan Anderson from Glenville is considered to be the 18th best prospect nationally, rated by Rivals. Ginn Srs kids used to be Buckeye by default, but Cordale Scott and others have been bucking the trend lately. People are saying Anderson is going to Morgantown.

Meanwhile, Sharrif Floyd, the nations top defensive tackle prospect has been dropping clues all week. A five star defensive tackle at 6-foot-3, 310 pounds that would have helped against Alabama's massive Crimson Line. Floyd is down to the Florida Gators and Ohio State. Thats what the hometown press in Philadelphia think, but at this point, its anybodys guess with the guy that wants to surprise people. Also in consideration are: NC, SC, Penn State, Mount Union. These type of decisions make the US Army All-American Bowl one of the most exciting football games to watch starring younger players.

The nations best recruit, offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson, will be playing for the West, but isnt expected to make a decision in the near future. Petey who was for a long time thought to be narrowed down to USC and Ohio State is heading to Seattle. Most say this is great news

St. Xs Matt James and Glennvilles Christian Bryant, both who remain undecided, can also find their way onto the 2010 class, depending on how things go in the All-American football game.

Matt Elam, the DB/RB is far from the best player in this game, but is perceived to be the best Florida high school player. After a verbal to Florida, verbal to FSU, Elam will do the ugly hat roulette with a Georgia hat thrown in for fun. Despite stories about what he said earlier this week, Elam will have some camera time to decide during the game.

Ronald Powell, the defensive end from California is choosing between two teams with coaching staffs in transition; Florida and USC. Unlike Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer does not appear to be going anywhere else for a while. Florida is seen as the probable choice here.

If you havent seen the game, go watch it online! Just search youtube for the US Army All-American Football Game 2010

Over the last 10 years, as football continues to grow in popularity at all levels, high school, college and pro, a new approach has been launched. Eight man football has grown in popularity, in particular during this decade. Now 18 states have official associations for eight man high school teams.

This is where the sport, and its cousin, six man football, got its start. Smaller high schools, without the population of male athletes that bigger schools have, couldnt field competitive eleven man squads. As I looked for the history of the eight man game, it was difficult to find anything related to its start. Six man football was documented as having started around 1934. But since both sports are typically organized and tracked state by state, I havent found any details about the start of the eight man version.

Rules and approaches differ from state to state, but for the most part, the game is similar to the eleven man version. Scoring is basically the same, although a lot of teams go for 2 point conversions rather than kicking extra points. This is mostly due to the lack of players who specialize in the kicking game.

Many leagues use a slightly different football field. Many eight man associations use an field that is 80 yards long and 40 yards wide as compared to 100 yards long and 53 yards wide for normal eleven man games. Some eight man associations use fields that are 100 yards long but only 40 yards wide, and a few associations use standard dimension football fields.

Formations do vary but the most common offensive formation uses a center, two guards, a tight end, a quarterback, two running backs, and a wide receiver. So the elimination of two tackles and one wide receiver is the most common change.

On the defensive side of the ball, the most common change to formation involves the elimination of two defensive backs and one defensive lineman. A very common defensive formation is a 3-3-2 with a nose tackle, two defensive ends, three linebackers, and two defensive backs.

In general, due to the smaller field and fewer players, the pace of eight man football is fast and scores are high. Its not uncommon to see scores like 72-64 on a regular basis. 100 point games are not unheard of. Many state associations utilize a mercy rule when a team gets up by 45 or more points as a result.

I started reading about eight and six man football because my sons both played for very small high school football teams. Most of the time, due to a lack of depth, most players played both ways and on special teams. Both my sons were pretty much on the football field for every play of the entire game.

Fortunately both my sons were able to play on good teams. But some of the teams we played really struggled to field a team, much less be very competitive. As I looked at the history of the eight man game, it seems like a great solution for small schools to allow kids to play the game of football without suffering through four years of losing on a regular basis.

The game seems to be a great alternative to eleven man football and its popularity seems to prove that many others think so.

In a another article, we talked about the soccer positions that soccer parents should understand. In this article, we will discuss the soccer field. A regulation size field is 100 yards long, and 60 yards wide. The same length as an American Football field, but slightly wider. Indoor soccer fields vary greatly in size, the field areas we will discuss below remain consistent.

We will start in the center of the field. In the middle of the field is the Center Circle. The center circle is area where the referee will start or restart the game. It has a ten yard radius, which players need to stay out of as the ball is started into play. In the center of the center circle is the center spot, which is the exact location of where the center kicks occur. There is also a line across the field at it's center. This is the center line, the center line is both the starting point, and also is used to determine offsides. We're not going to get into that penalty for now.

Then we have the sidelines, marking the side boundaries of the field, but for us soccer parents, it is technically called the touch line. At the two ends of the field we have the end lines, also known as the goal lines.

At each end is also the penalty area, a rectangle around the goal where the goalie can use his hands. It also in an area that provides safety to offensive players from excessive roughness from defenders. If an excessive foul happens within this area, it results in a penalty kick. There is also a smaller box within the penalty area called the goal area, this is the area where penalty kicks are taken. This is the area soccer parents need to dread, many games are won and lost by penalty kicks.

A few other areas soccer parents should know about. We have the corner arcs, which are found at the four corners of the playing field. These arcs are the locations where corner kicks are taken. Corner kicks happen after a team kicks the ball over the end line. There is a penalty arc, which designates the area near the goal, where all other players except the goalkeeper and the penalty kicker, must remain out of, while a penalty kick is in progress. Then within the penalty arc, there is the penalty spot or mark, which is the location the ball is laid for the penalty kick.

One note I'd like to mention for all of you soccer parents, indoor soccer usually results in a much smaller field, and results in shrinking the dimensions of many of the areas. But normally all of these key areas of the soccer field remain intact. Indoor soccer play is often quite different than outdoor soccer due to the smaller size fields.

I hope understanding a little more about the field, and all of the markings on the field, will help new soccer parents to enjoy this wonderful game. With a clear understanding of the field, you can also help coaches in teaching your young soccer player. Let's hit the field, time for soccer parents to cheer our kids, and have some fun!

It is that time again, when the boys of the gridiron take over our lives. Yes, you guessed it, I am talking about the NFL Football season. For all you football fans your time has come to stand up and cheer!

It does not matter which team you show your support for, the die-hard fan honorably & proudly wears his/her team colors. He or she displays their favorite team by wearing a team jersey, ball cap, belt buckle, or even a pullover shirt.

The dedication these fans have to the devotion of their favorite team is relentless. Each year you can find more and more of the NFL sport collectables. This new merchandise seems to have greater colors and many new gadgets. All this to quench the thirst of that #1 fan who just has to have the ultimate collectable. This fan wants to be able to show that he/she is truly the teams best fan.

The sports fan will look high and low for sports collectables. Some look by surfing the internet, others check out every sporting goods store in town just looking for that one-of-a kind item they just got in. He/she is driven with an itch that cannot be scratched until completing the mission at hand.

Sports fans can support their favorite team in many different ways. Weather decorating their bedroom or game room with a team pennant, sleeping under official team blankets, painting the room in his favorite teams colors, or even by drinking out of either a coffee mug or a cool freeze mug.

The fierce competitiveness on the football field boils over to the fans who have that desire to have everything his/her team has to offer, from playing cards, mini helmets or even ice coolers.

Sports Collectables have every thing you need for that awesome bar-be-que for the tail gate party with all of your friends at the big game on Sunday.

You can bet he is driven with the urge to show all his friends that his team is the best team in the whole NFL. As he travels great distances to see his team play football and dresses up in all the teams colors. He also will be watching his favorite team play everytime they are on t.v. and you can be sure that the #1 sports fan will be the one you hear hollering at the t.v.

as his team scores that amazing touchdown!

When a sports fan gets together with his friends or family all he wants to talk about & think about is his team. He will usually know every one of his teams stats, what place they are in, who they play next, and what it will take to win the next game.

On your sports fans birthday, it is a great time to splurge and give that sport collectable gift or gift certificate to the one you care so much about.

NFL Sport Collectables will have great financial impact on a city with all the revenue of sport fan merchandise, ticket sales, food purchases and beer sales.

So it is that time again, to get out all of our sports gear and all of our NFL stuff to show support for our favorite team.

Some people will go to any length to support their favorite sports team, whether it is wearing tennis shoes made by your team or driving to the park to play ball with your team logo on your clothes.

So with this in mind, it is important to have the NFL merchandise available because you never know when the next sports fan will be looking for that once in a lifetime find.

I'm very sorry to hear that former NFL quarterback Steve McNair, was found dead in his downtown condominium. He had a fatal bullet wound in his head. Terrible!

36-year-old McNair have been in NFL for 13 seasons, and just retired in April last year. When in Tennessee Titans, McNair led the team to Super Bowl in 2000, which they lost 23-16 to the St. Louis Rams. He was co-MVP of the NFL with Colts quarterback Peyton Manning in 2003.

We are deeply affected by the news of his death. To his former teammates, McNair is an excellent player on the football field and a friend in the locker room.

"If you were going to draw a football player, the physical part, the mental part, everything about being a professional, he is your guy. It is a sad, sad day. The world lost a great man today." Ravens defensive back Samari Rolle said. He played with McNair in Tennessee and Baltimore.

"This is so, so sad," said Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome, who worked the trade with Tennessee. "What we admired most about Steve when we played against him was his competitive spirit, and we were lucky enough to have that with us for two years. He is one of the best players in the NFL over the last 20 years."

No matter which team McNair played for, he always believed in the upward look, even he got hurt during the games. That was McNair. It wasn't about putting up numbers, but about winning. And he was the most selfless, optimistic and friendliest person that was willing to offer a hand to who was in need.

His spirit and skill compel our admiration. We will remember his everything forever. May he rest in peace!

I think those who are interested in coaching youth football are admirable. Not only do you get to teach kids football fundamentals; but you teach them well-documented life lessons and become an example and mentor. A youth football coachs responsibility is to instill quality values such as confidence, discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Applying these values to the game of football will help you to produce winners on and off the field. Here are a couple simple tips to focus on as you approach your first time coaching youth football.

Youth Football Coaching Strategies

Rules

Set the ground rules for the players and their parents at the start of the season. Be clear on the rules for practices, attendance, player participation, fundraising, effort, and sportsmanship. That way everyone knows what to expect and there are no surprises during the season.

Time Management

You have the football field for a limited amount of time. Dont waste it performing extensive conditioning drills. Use the time wisely and teach real football during these sessions. You want kids to have fun and learn the game. Thats what they signed up forthey can run conditioning and agility drills any time.

Drills

Yes, you need to run conditioning drills but limit them in your practice. You should be teaching your kids life skills such as developing the discipline to work out and perform interval training on their own. Develop the childs love of the game first, but keep them accountable.

Moreover, there are many elaborate football drill libraries on the Internet such as those at Weplay. While a coach should select a variety of age-appropriate drills for coaching his team, focusing on these basics and making them fun for the team will often lead to greater success.

Morale

End your practices on a high note. Too many coaches run sprints or laps at the end of the practice and the players dislike them. Instead, run special team drills such as kickoff returns or punt coverage for your end-of-practice conditioning drills. Youll get them in top shape while making it fun and teaching valuable football skills at the same time.

Playbook

In youth football, its better to run a few plays really well than run many plays poorly. Pick four or five plays as the core of your offensive strategy and practice the execution until the players can run them in their sleep. Only then, should you start introducing new plays.

With a focus on some simple basics, youth football coaches can successfully start down their path. By teaching youth football and the life lessons of discipline, self-motivation, sportsmanship and fair play, a coachs experience can be both enjoyable and meaningful. The integrity that you insist they use on the field will follow them off the field.

Football is definitely a sport that requires a combination of skills and athletic ability. This is why it's so important to develop a football conditioning program that would help you improve in every aspect of the game. These aspects include: strength, cardiovascular, and cardiorespiratory training. All of these areas need to be improved upon and directed towards skill improvement that mimics what takes place on the football field. Football players often require endurance, strength, flexibility, coordination, and explosive speed and acceleration.

The purpose of this article is not to give you a blueprint of an exact conditioning program but instead to give you what you need to know to design one for yourself. This is because one program will not necessarily work for everyone. Schedules sometimes need to be adjusted and programs need to be flexible when necessary.

A good preseason football conditioning program should begin 8-10 weeks before the season and should take place six days a week. The seven day should be used for resting and recovery. If you train too hard and do not rest your muscles you will almost certainly receive an injury. During the course of your work out stretching is one of the most important things you can do to avoid injury. This will also help you promote muscle growth and flexibility if done over a period of time.

Day 1: Run 3-5 miles

On day one you should run three to 5 miles in order to promote endurance and your cardiovascular systems. Each week of training start off with a three-mile run. If this is not enough then do an extra mile or two but don't become too excessive because you'll certainly run more later in the week.

Day 2, 4, and 6: Work on Speed Training

On these days your focus should be on speed and acceleration. The best way to work on speed and acceleration is doing some form of sprinting. Remember to stretch between sprints and at the end of your work out.

Day 3 and 5: Work on skills that are specific to your position and strength training

You can develop position specific skills by doing a variety of practice drills. Obviously because each position has different skills we cannot go over them all here. If for example you are a running back, you want a practice run blocking, ball handling, receiving, pass blocking, and agility drills.

After position specific training, focus on strength training. Focus on those areas which are specifically needed for your position. Finish off with a three-mile run.

Your football conditioning program should be approached with caution. If you overwork your body you may end up injured and not able to play at all during the season.

Therefore is important to take it slow careful and do plenty of stretching. Finally it is always important to your diet high in protein and carbohydrates to keep yourself energized. This will also help your body perform at its best. By following a strict football conditioning program you should have a great season.
