This should be another great year of NFL football as there is much to get excited about. The first things I want to make sure everyone is aware of are the new head coaching changes. First, in Buffalo Chan Gailey in now the head coach. His last football job was offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs but was let go just weeks before the start of the 2009 season. You probably are more familiar with Gailey as the head college football coach for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He was there for 6 seasons and appeared in a bowl game every one of those seasons. He also was the Dallas Cowboys head coach for 2 season from 1998-1999.

He was not the Bills first choice as they really wanted to hire Bill Cowher but settled for Gailey. The Bills have been stagnating for quite some time with not only inconsistency by missing the playoff but also juggling quarterbacks. Good luck to coach Gailey.

Now off to Seattle as the Seahawks have a new coach in Pete Carroll. Gone is Jim Mora and in is former coach of the University of Southern California Trojans. Carroll has been rumored every year to make the move to the NFL and finally he did. The Seahawks were underachievers last season yet still have enough talent to compete in the NFC West Division. Carroll is no stranger as a NFL head coach as he previously was the head coach for the New York Jets and the New England Patriots. It has been awhile since Carroll was in the NFL but he should fit right in with the Seahawks.

Now at last the final head coaching change is in the nation's capital as the Washington Redskins now have Mike Shanahan as their head coach. You had to know that Shanahan was going to coach again and coach soon. He spent 14 seasons as the Denver Broncos head coach and won 2 super bowls. Parlay this with Redskins owner Dan Snyder making key player moves like acquiring Donovan NcNabb should make the Redskins a playoff team this coming season. I am very interested to see how the Redskins perform this season more than any other team. They are definitely committed to making a playoff run and the excitement this brings has my eyes on them.

To wrap things up, there are only 3 head coaching changes for the 2010 season. All are well known head coaches and should have success. As for me I predict the Redskins will not only get tremendous attention this coming season but will win their division. I know its way too early for that talk but the NFL football excitement has begun.

Because rookie contracts last a minimum of three years, this leaves players with 3-5 years of experience as restricted free agents.

So whatdoes that mean? As you might guess, it means you're a highly paid serf. Your former team still owns yourservicesand can "tender" you a contract offer for the next year.Tenderoffers range from $1 to $3 million. Not chump change, but if you're, for example, Brandon Marshall, you might want to seek out a better offer that's consistent with your market value.But it will likely be very hard for the Brandon Marshalls of the world to find a new, properly compensating home, for two reasons: (a) the original team has a right of first refusal to match any offer; and (b) if the original team doesn't match, the new team has to compensate the original team with draft picks. The higher the tender offer, the more draft picks you have to compensate the original team with, up to a maximum of a first and third-rounder.

Over the last 10 years, as football continues to grow in popularity at all levels, high school, college and pro, a new approach has been launched. Eight man football has grown in popularity, in particular during this decade. Now 18 states have official associations for eight man high school teams.

This is where the sport, and its cousin, six man football, got its start. Smaller high schools, without the population of male athletes that bigger schools have, couldnt field competitive eleven man squads. As I looked for the history of the eight man game, it was difficult to find anything related to its start. Six man football was documented as having started around 1934. But since both sports are typically organized and tracked state by state, I havent found any details about the start of the eight man version.

Rules and approaches differ from state to state, but for the most part, the game is similar to the eleven man version. Scoring is basically the same, although a lot of teams go for 2 point conversions rather than kicking extra points. This is mostly due to the lack of players who specialize in the kicking game.

Many leagues use a slightly different football field. Many eight man associations use an field that is 80 yards long and 40 yards wide as compared to 100 yards long and 53 yards wide for normal eleven man games. Some eight man associations use fields that are 100 yards long but only 40 yards wide, and a few associations use standard dimension football fields.

Formations do vary but the most common offensive formation uses a center, two guards, a tight end, a quarterback, two running backs, and a wide receiver. So the elimination of two tackles and one wide receiver is the most common change.

On the defensive side of the ball, the most common change to formation involves the elimination of two defensive backs and one defensive lineman. A very common defensive formation is a 3-3-2 with a nose tackle, two defensive ends, three linebackers, and two defensive backs.

In general, due to the smaller field and fewer players, the pace of eight man football is fast and scores are high. Its not uncommon to see scores like 72-64 on a regular basis. 100 point games are not unheard of. Many state associations utilize a mercy rule when a team gets up by 45 or more points as a result.

I started reading about eight and six man football because my sons both played for very small high school football teams. Most of the time, due to a lack of depth, most players played both ways and on special teams. Both my sons were pretty much on the football field for every play of the entire game.

Fortunately both my sons were able to play on good teams. But some of the teams we played really struggled to field a team, much less be very competitive. As I looked at the history of the eight man game, it seems like a great solution for small schools to allow kids to play the game of football without suffering through four years of losing on a regular basis.

The game seems to be a great alternative to eleven man football and its popularity seems to prove that many others think so.

With the teams poor record, Zorns firing was not unexpected. Allen stated that he wanted to give the team a breath of fresh air, and believed that Shanahan would provide the players the support they needed. This is the second year in a row that the Redskins have missed the playoffs and an opportunity to fight for the Super Bowl.

Zorn ended up with a 12-20 record over two seasons and lost 18 of his last 24 games after a 6-2 start in 2008, his best record with the Redskins. The team then struggled early this season despite a weak schedule and finished with its worst record since 1994.

Shanahan was formally introduced to the team and media on Wednesday, two days after he started the official negotiations that also brought his son, Kyle Shanahan, the Houston Texans offensive coordinator, on the team. Shanahan has stated that his son is a very talented professional and that both can take the Redskins to a better level for next season.

"I've got very high standards, just like everybody in this organization," Shanahan said. "I can't tell you how long it's going to take. But I can guarantee you: We'll get better every day and hopefully it won't take long to get back to where this organization has been."

Team owner Dan Snyder is also very pleased with the acquisition of Shanahan. Snyder was the general manager for 11 years but during his time in the position, the Redskins failed 8 times on getting to the playoffs. He then hired Allen three weeks ago to take full control of the team.

"We've got the foundation here now ... with Bruce, and coach Shanahan is our leader," Snyder said. "They're going to be a great team."

Shanahan used to be the head coach for the Denver Broncos. He stood in that position from 1995 up to 2008. He made it to the playoffs in half of his 14 seasons in Denver, and had only two losing seasons, 1999 and 2007. His greatest successes came early, when he won consecutive Super Bowls after the 1997 and '98 seasons. He was fired a year ago when the Broncos missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year. He had 3 years left in his contract.

His career record, including two seasons with the Los Angeles Raiders, is 146-98 in the regular season and 8-5 in the playoffs.

But Warner is going to be trying to surpass NFCs top defense. In general terms, the Cards have a bit more experience in playoffs. But the Packers have built great momentum from their last games.
