At the end of each regular season, six teams from each conference play in the NFL playoffs, a twelve-team single-elimination tournament that culminates with the championship game, known as the Super Bowl. This game is held at a pre-selected site which is usually a city that hosts an NFL team.

Season structure

Since 2002, The NFL season features the following schedule:

a 4-game exhibition season (or preseason) running from early August to early September;
a 16-game, 17-week regular season running from September to December or early January; and
a 12-team Single-elimination playoff beginning in January, culminating in the Super Bowl in early February.

Traditionally, American high school football games are played on Friday, American college football games are played on Saturday, and most NFL games are played on Sunday. Because the NFL season is longer than the college football season, the NFL schedules Saturday games and Saturday playoff games outside the college football season. The ABC Television network added Monday Night Football in 1970, and Thursday night NFL games were added in the 1980s.

Regular season

A sample scheduling grid, with a single team's (the Browns) schedule highlighted. Under this hypothetical schedule, the Browns would play the teams in blue twice and the teams in yellow once, for a total of sixteen games.

Each team plays the other three teams in their division twice: once at home, and once on the road (six games).
Each team plays four teams from another division within its own conference once on a rotating three-year cycle: two at home, and two on the road (four games).
Each team plays four teams from a division in the other conference once on a rotating four-year cycle: two at home, and two on the road (four games).

The NFL Playoffs. Each of the four division winners is seeded 14 based on their W-L-T records. The two Wild Card teams (labeled Wild Card 1 and 2) are seeded fifth and sixth (with the better of the two having seed 5) regardless of their records compared to the four division winners.

The season concludes with a twelve-team tournament used to determine the teams to play in the Super Bowl. The #1 and #2 seeds from each conference receive a bye in the first round, which entitles these teams to automatically advance to the second round, the Divisional Playoff games, to face the winning teams from the first round. In round two, the #1 seeded team always plays the lowest surviving seed in their conference. And in any given playoff game, whoever has the higher seed gets the home field advantage (i.e. the game is held at the higher seed's home field).

The two surviving teams from the Divisional Playoff games meet in Conference Championship games, with the winners of those contests going on to face one another in the Super Bowl in a game located at a neutral venue that is either indoors or in a warm-weather locale. The designated "home team" alternates year to year between the conferences. In Super Bowl XLIV, the AFC Champion was the "home" team.

Pro Bowl

The Pro Bowl, the league's all-star game, has been traditionally held on the weekend after the Super Bowl. The game was played at various venues before being held at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii for 30 consecutive seasons from 1980 to 2009.

However, the 2010 Pro Bowl was played at Sun Life Stadium, the home stadium of the Miami Dolphins and host site of Super Bowl XLIV, on January 31, the first time ever that the Pro Bowl was played before the championship game. The 2011 and 2012 games will return to Honolulu.

Football took off in the 1920s in Hyderabad, the city of the Nizams. Football there received the patronage of the royalty, especially of the Nawab of Tarband and the Maharajas of Kakinada and Rajamundhri. Hyderabad Football Association was formed in 1939. Its first President was late Gulam Mohammed. Late SM Hadi was the first secretary of HFA. Ahmed Mohiuddin was a great sports lover and he was instrumental in starting almost every sports association in Hyderabad.

In 1942, SM Hadi became the President of Hyderabad Football Association and the legendary coach, SA Rahim, its Secretary. He was hailed in that post until his death in June1963. Till 1958, Hyderabad and Andhra were regarded as separate bodies by the AIFF. From 1959, these two bodies came under one banner, Andhra Pradesh Football Association. To do this Rahim Saheb took major initiative.

The most famous team to emerge from this city was the black and yellow shirted Hyderabad City Police. They were known as the "City Afghans", in accordance with the name of the police force during the reign of the Nizam of Hyderabad and which was renamed as Hyderabad City Police after independence. The team had a string of successes in the pre-independent era.

One famous game, which brought HCP into limelight for the first time, was the Ashe Gold Cup final in Bengaluru in 1943. The City Afghans, won 2-1 against Royal Air Force, the team included England?s cricket and football international Denis Compton. The City Afghans trailed by a single goal for most part of the game, but rallied to a dramatic win with two late penalties by Norbert Andrew Fruvall.

Later Fruvall had moulded Hyderabad City Police into one of the best teams in the country. Under his captaincy, HCP won 1950 Durand Cup football, the first after Independence in 1947 (tournament was not held from 1941 to 1949), in a memorable final against Mohun Bagan. That was their first win in Durand Cup.

Playing with determination and receiving quite negligible rewards for their performances, the club was popular all over India and came to be identified as the team of the common man. In the period just after independence, HCP came to symbolize the philosophy and spirits of the age, the will to sacrifice, overcome odds. Their popularity transcended regional and religious identities.

From mid 40s to mid 60s, teams from Hyderabad either won or left lasting impressions in the tournaments they participated from Kashmir to Kanya Kumari and from Guwahati to Bombay. Apart from Hyderabad City Police, there were several outstanding teams from Hyderabad. The teams were 'A' Battery, Ordnance Depot, Railway Recreation Club (now Central Railway), Central Police Lines (B team of HCP), Road Transport Recreation Club, DBB Mills, L Motiram Club, Hyderabad Nationals, Hyderabad Sporting, Raiders Club, Hyderabad Athletic Club, Maisram Star, Bolaram Sporting, Secunderabad Blues, City College Old Boys, Hyderabad Rovers, Hyderabad Arsenal, Grass Hoppers, Hyderabad Heroes, Secunderabad Dynamos, Eleven Hunters, Andhra Sporting, Abbas Union, Hyderabad Telephones, All Saints Old Boys and Vehicle Sub Depot.

About 15 teams were there from Hyderabad in late '50s. They played in different tournaments throughout the country. Even in 1965 DCM Trophy final, Hyderabad City Police, the then Andhra Pradesh Police and its 'B' team Central Police Lines, fought with each other for the honour. Central Police Lines beat formidable Mohammedan Sporting Club in semi-final.

Yusuf Khan, Syed Naeemuddin, Sathyanarayan, Saleh (Jr), Shafeeq, represented APP, while Jafar. Rasool, Kaleemuddin, Pandhari, Saleh (Sr), and Md. Saleemullah were in the Central Police Lines team. APP won the final. In 1954 IFA Shield, almost all Hyderabad City Police players played for Hyderabad Sporting but lost in the final to Mohun Bagan.

During that period there were some very strong College teams, such as Osmania Unversity, Nizam College, City College, Science College and Saifabad Govt. Technical College. The college authorities used to encourage and motivate the footballers. These colleges helped to keep constant flow of good footballers to the clubs. Rahim Saheb was a graduate of Osmania University.

School and college teams were so strong at that time that Hyderabad City Police had to sweat for its victory against them in practice matches. In this regard, the name of late Md. Ghousuddin should be mentioned here. He was the coach and an influential person in the Selection Committee of Osmania University. Later on, he became Secretary of Andhra Pradesh Football Association after the death of Rahim Saheb. Being a close friend of Rahim Saheb, he learnt many finer points of training and coaching from him. His coaching was scientific and methodical.

Prof. V.M. Sham Raj of Engineering College of Osmania University, who also played for the state team in Santosh Trophy, once wrote in an article about his working experience with Md. Ghousuddin, "I was then student of Osmania University and eagerly looking forward for the selection in the football team. We were to take part in the All India Inter University Tournament to be held in Tirupathi in the month of November 1957".

It was very difficult to get chance in the University team. Ghousuddin Saheb was the Coach and manager of the team. After the initial selection trials I was selected in the 14 members team. The moves planned for a match, were first theoretically explained in the classroom, using black board and coloured chalk pieces. In those days video and other visual aids were not available. The same moves were put in practice many times till they were perfected. After the practice session in the morning, we used to have regular practice matches with other teams like the reputed Hyderabad City Police and E.M.E. Centre.

During the time of Ghousuddin Saheb, Osmania University was almost unbeatable in the All India Inter University Football in the later part of '50s." Osmania University won All India University Football in 1954, 1955 and 1959. They also won several All India level tournaments. Schools from Hyderabad won All India Inter School tournaments from 1955 to 1959 and subsequently on three more occasions.

The period from 1945 to 1965 was believed to be the Golden Era of Hyderabad Football. Incidentally, the period between 1951 and 1962 was supposed to be the Golden Period of Indian Football. During this time, the world started to recognise India as one of the football powers.

Interestingly, in this period Rahim Saheb was the national coach and except winning the gold medal in 1951 Asian Games, India's all achievements came under his training and coaching. It would not be irrelevant to say that as long as the 'Messaih of Indian Football' Rahim Saheb and Hyderabad Football were at the hail of national arena, India accomplished its dream to a great extent. India's record to achieve forth position in Olympic (1956 Melbourne Olympics) was still unmatched by any other Asian nation. For the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, Rahim Saheb was selected as the coach and the team participated at Helsinki without much training. The thrashing of Indian team there by Yugoslavia by 10-1 made him ponder over the reasons for the defeat. He studied continental football closely and adopted new systems and formations.

Returning from Helsinki, he changed the formation of the state team from the well-known roving centre half to 'W-formation'. He worked hard on this formation, unmindful of criticism. The Indian team, with Rahim as its coach, beat Pakistan in the Quadrangular Tournament at Dacca in 1952 adopting the new formation.

The famous double Olympian (1956 & 1960) T Balaraman was apparently distressed at the state of football, both in Hyderabad and Kolkata. "The standard of football is deteriorating every day everywhere," he asserted. As student of Bolarum High School of Secunderabad, Rahim Saheb first spotted him. Balaraman's joy and tension, in replacing his role model and first guru Susaih (Jr) in the State team, knew no bounds. He became reminiscent, "Rahim Saheb took me home, showed the silver medal won by Andhra Pradesh in the Senior Nationals earlier and then told me, now it is in your hands to win the gold in the Santosh Trophy.

How many coaches could do that? He was God to me and to most of the footballers then. I was yet to see any coach showing such commitment, dedication, sincerity and objectivity in selections." He continued, "When Hyderabad had nine members in the 1956 Olympics team, that itself was a great tribute to the great coach."

Balaraman recalled vivid memories of his illustrious coach, "He was suffering from pleurisy. Nonetheless, he was always there at the ground. His pep talk, 'You are the privileged 11 chosen to play for the country. Give something back to the country, remember the soldiers who sacrifice so much. It is time we make the country proud by winning the gold. I never wanted anything from you. Today give me and the country that piece of gold.' And we did so, beating South Korea 2-1 in the final with P.K. Banerjee and Jarnail Singh being the scorers."

The Present State of AP Football. It was a shocking experience for anybody when one did not find any team from Andhra Pradesh even in the qualifying round of 2nd Division National League. There were teams from Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, but not a single team from Hyderabad, what was once known to be the nursery of Indian Football. Even after 15 years of National Football League, presently rechristened as I League, not a single team represented the state. Football in AP had hit rock bottom and it was not hard to come across this decline. The game was badly affected by politics, groupism, ego clashes and sheer lack of administrative power and efficiency.

Hyderabad produced as many as 14 Olympians and many internationals. S.K. Moinuddin, Noor Mohammed and SK. Azizuddin represented 1952 Helsinki Olympics. There were eight Hyderabadis, such as Noor Mohammed, SK Azizuddin, SA Salam. T Balaraman, SA Latif, Peter Thangaraj, Ahmed Hussain and Zulfiqaruddin in the national team, which managed the fourth position in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Balaraman, SA Latif, Zulfiqaruddin, Yusuf Khan, SS Hakim, Syed Habibulla Hassan Hamed and Dharmalingam Kanan of Hyderabad represented the country at the Rome Olympics.

Azizuddin played for the country regularly from 1949 to 1958 and Noor Mohammed from 1950 to 1958. They played for the country in two Olympics and three Asian Games (in 51, 54 and 58). Aziz was the captain of India at Tokyo Asian Games in 1958. Hyderabad also produced international footballers like DMK Afzal (1962 Jakarta Asian Games), Syed Naeemuddin, Md.Habib, Md. Akbar, Sabbir Ali, Victor Amalraj, Md. Fareed Et al. We can only hope, if not hoping against hope, one day in near future Hyderabad Football will revive to its own glory. Football and relationships can be a dangerous combination. As an avid football fan, as well as serial monogamist, I should know. By my last count, Ive given 13 different women the title of girlfriend since I was old enough to know what that means. And each one had a different way of annoying me when we watched football together, except number 13 who, by no coincidence, now holds the title of Mrs. Wise Guy. Since Ive finally found the Holy Grail of female football watching companionship, I feel Im uniquely qualified to use my vast powers of nitpicky observation for good and hand out some advice to the female readers of this site.

The first thing you should know is that as different as men may be in their knowledge and interest in football, we are remarkably uniform when it comes to spotting an attractive woman (sure, theres controversy around themargins, call it the Kirsten Dunst line). More importantly, we can all agree on who the cool girls are, and whether youre a wife, girlfriend, or out there looking, it behooves you to be football cool. Theres a theory floating around that knowing football can raise a girl up to 2 points on the proverbial 1 to 10 scale, and I completely subscribe to it. For the majority of men, football is our favorite sport, and being able to share that joy with our lady is surpassed only by sex, food, and, perhaps the birth of a child. On the other hand, many women can (both knowingly and unknowingly) ruin the football watching experience for men, which is the first step toward tuning you out in general.

To help maximize your potential to be football cool, Ive broken down women into four categories: the hater, the tolerator, the casual fan, and the knowledgeable fan. Sure, I could do the same for men (for example, pompous guy who tries to correct everyone on rules, the mysogonist, the guy who only cares about fantasy, the dorky guy who pretends to care but only wants to talk about his job , the alcoholic), but thats not the point of article. The point here is to maximize your desirability to men with a few basic insights into our fairly uniform psychology. Do with that power what you will.

The Hater

You do not like football. Except for gymnastics in the Olympics, you can do without sports entirely. Chances are, you grew up in a household with your two sisters and a domineering mother who trained your father to pee sitting down so the toilet would always be clean. Ever since you were tormented by that cheerleader and her dumbass boyfriend in study hall, youve gone out of your way to avoid the jocks. You found a sanctuary in the artsy/theatre clique in high school, and you went to a small liberal arts college that didnt even have a football team. Frankly, I have no idea how you got to this website.

After getting your masters in [something impractical], you took root in the bohemian part of the city and finally started looking for a life partner. One day at a random museum, there he was: cultured, sensitive, philanthropic, and, of course, nerdy cute. You spent a glorious summer together taking day trips, seeing movies, buying used books, and checking out the latest new coffee shops. During an August weekend trip in the Poconos, you declared your love, and you moved in with him the next week. As fall approached, you started secretly checking out Open Houses in the paper.

But then that fateful day came when he ever so meekly declared that he likes to watch the Seahawks on Sundays. And the other good games. And the cherry on top, that he plays fantasy. Ugh. At this point, youre trapped. You love him (not to mention that you sold all your furniture on craigslist), but you never fathomed being with a person that, eek, liked football. You instantly harken back to your childhood and remember all those great tactics that your mom used on your father: take a hard line initially; acquiesce only if he begs and make it seem like youre doing him a favor by letting him watch the games; then, while hes watching the games, ask him to do chores or take out the dog. Sounds like the perfect solution.

Except that its not. Sooner or later, hes going to get away from you for a bachelor party weekend and go all Ed Helms from The Hangover on you. So let him have his 3-9 hours on Sunday. Just leave and find something else to do. It will all be over soon.

Of course, if hes also into college football you should just cut your losses and end the relationship now. Its not going to work out.

The Tolerator

You have about as much interest in football as your "hater" counterpart, but unlike her, you're a natural pleaser. While we appreciate that, you must tread lightly if you want to venture into watching games with us. Being a football tolerator is like being a doctor, your oath is do no harm. First and foremost, this means you have to pay attention to the game. Because football is such a long game, there's a lot of time when fans are talking about other things or just not paying attention. However, during those crucial moments--a fourth down place, a two-minute drill, a game winning field goal--there is nothing more annoying than someone talking.

As a corollary to the pay attention rule, lets say youre looking to spice up your game-watching experience with a little action during halftime. Normally this would qualify you as the coolest football girl ever, but if its, say, halftime of the 2005 Divisional Playoffs, and Steve Smith just torched your secondary for the second deep touchdown of the game going into the half, your man is not going to be in the mood. Know the game situation and the emotional effect it is having on him.

And let me just suggest, if you take the initiative to actually try and learn the game, it could pay huge dividends in the football cool department. There is no stupid question when it comes to football, and we guys get off on displaying knowledge and authority. Just dont ask during a 4th and goal.

The Casual Fan

This is the category most fans fall under, guy or girl. Most likely, you were huge into your college team. But the NFL is not college. Being a college football fan is easy. You just dress up in your schools gear, drink yourself into a stupor, and scream your head off for three hours.

But, lets face it, the NFL has become the place for the sophisticated fan (minus your proverbial cheesehead, Dawg mask, and spiked shoulder pads), and its a minefield for the uninitiated. With all the technological advances and the growing popularity, you cannot escape NFL analysis. Every fan now has an opinion on the game theyre watching, which is cemented by all the talking heads on ESPN, the NFL Network, and the pre and post-game shows. Throw fantasy in the mix, and now youre talking about a sport that has become overwhelming to many fans.

So if your goal is to maximize the football cool, youve got some major learning to do. But you enjoy the game, have a strong rooting interest for your team, and youve come to this site, so youre already halfway there.

Unfortunately, the second half involves work. You need to go to a football-related websites every morning (hmmI wonder which one?) and read the major stories. Watch Sportscenter or another highlight show Sunday night to make sure you know what happened in every game. For most guys, this comes as second nature (because we dont have that many interests), but for women its tougher because theres shoes on zappos to buy, trips to plan, and celebrity gossip to check out. But trust me, get in this habit, and youll be amazed at the dividends. Especially for all the single ladies (all the single ladies!). Just knowing the major storylines and what happened in every game will allow you to hang at any happy hour, dinner party, or corporate boondoggle conversation involving the NFL. If you throw in a little humor by ripping the crappy teams or moronic coaching moves, youll instantly be labeled a cool girl. Youll have so much hand, youll be coming out of your gloves.

However, if you want to make it with the knowledgeable fans outside the singles scene and during the actual games, well then just a cursory knowledge of what happened is not sufficient. You have to know why it happened. Im hardly the authority on why the events of professional football play out like they do. But this much I know: 95% of fans, 80% of announcers, and 30% of coaches (Jim Zorn, Herm Edwards, and Dennis Green come to mind) dont either. You must find the experts. Easiest way: watch Cris Collinsworth on Sunday night because he knows his stuff and breaks down the strategy in football beyond the customary hes playing with a lot of passion out there line you get from most announcers. Also great is the Playbook AFC or NFC shows on the NFL network that breakdown actual game film and show you how formations have a huge effect on how a given play turns out. My personal belief is that knowing the strategy that goes behind football makes watching the games a much more fulfilling experience because you appreciate just what a chess match the game is.

On a more practical level, just knowing a little bit about the strategy behind the game will instantly make you more knowledgeable than almost any guy youre with, and you will immediately begin wowing people with insights without even knowing it. Assuming you take the advice in the next section, youll be about as football cool as they come.

The Knowledgeable Fan

You know the game inside and out. You play fantasy football and kick everyones ass. Everything in this article up to this point was a curiosity, like a college professor sitting in on a high school class. And we guys are simply in awe. But, as Michael Jordan recently showed at his Hall of Fame induction speech, just because youre good at something does not make you likeable or cool. If you have a chip on your shoulder, are combative, or proclaim know-it-all status, people will tolerate you when youre around and make snide remarks behind your back. Now, as a know-it-all myself, Ive become all too familiar with the looks on peoples faces when Ive crossed the line into pompousness. But women who know sports, especially football, they have a certain perspective that Ive only come to appreciate after several blissful seasons with Mrs. Wise Guy.

Other girls it ruin for you. The haters, the tolerators, the casual fans, they all condition guys to believe you dont know anything. You constantly feel like you have to prove yourself and establish your credibility. Ladies, I feel your pain, but simply, you must get over it. The vast majority of guys will instantly recognize you as different and give you the respect you deserve. So have confidence, and dont go on the warpath when you feel disrespected.

By that same token, there is something to male bonding that goes beyond just talking about football. So, please, try your best to not get too annoyed when we regress into those moments. The interplay of busting each others balls, arguing about which celebrity du jour is hotter, or communicating through movie quotes is something that many women have a hard time breaking into, no matter how much you think youre one of the guys. Again, you just have to understand that this is not about you. Its a long game, and that Will Ferrell impression that youve heard for the 120th time will eventually end. And though youre rolling your eyes for the 119th time, if you stay cool, well love you for it.

The Wise Guy: Dave Emanuelson

Dave bears no resemblance to the Three Stooges or a mobster, but a Wise Guy he is all the same. He boasts an impressive pedigree as a big-time D.C. lawyer, 10-year streak of straight As from sixth grade to his junior year in college, former Division 1 athlete (golf, but still...), and a 82% percent success rate of predicting whether instant replays will be overturned.

Dave never played football, but he's been to two Super Bowls (just the parties), walked the red carpet at the ESPYs, and once rode in an SUV with Brady Quinn. He's currently a two-time defending champion of his fantasy football league.
